The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry will be renewed this Saturday when the 7th ranked Auburn Tigers travel between the hedges in Athens for a date with the 4th ranked Georgia Bulldogs in a clash of SEC heavyweights. After considerable anticipation, the SEC finally kicked off their season last week. Both Auburn and Georgia took care of business against conference foes. The Tigers defense shined in a 29-13 victory over no. 23 Kentucky. Meanwhile, Georgia flexed its muscles with ease in a 37-10 win over Arkansas. This week the competition heats up for two SEC powerhouses that have SEC Championship hopes on the line.

Quarterback controversy still brewing in Athens

Despite the fact Georgia made easy work of Arkansas last week, the game did not exactly solve the quarterback debate that has continued throughout the fall in Athens. Freshman Quarterback D'Wan Mathis got the start for Georgia last week. I mentioned previously that Mathis was an athlete type quarterback that had flashy potential. However, Mathis did not look good in the opener. The freshman struggled, completing just 8 of 17 passing for 55 yards with an interception. Mathis was also stymied in the rushing department with just four yards on ten attempts.

Luckily, Head Coach Kirby Smart had the confidence to bring in junior Stetson Bennett off the bench, which proved to be a sharp move. Bennett revived the Bulldogs offense by completing 20 of 29 passing for 211 yards with two touchdowns. Not only did Bennett look solid throwing the football, but he also got playmaker receivers Georgia Pickens, and Kearis Jackson involved frequently. Pickens is among the SEC's most talented receivers, and it is imperative that Georgia must get him the football. However, despite Bennett's strong performance, he has not been named the starter for this week's homestand against Auburn. Coach Smart stated that the quarterback battle would carry-on throughout this week's practices, and there could be another hot hand approach on Saturday.

Auburn vs. Georgia Match-Up Analysis

Like any betting analysis, the key to this game is understanding the stylistic match-ups and how they pair up against each other on Saturday. Last week, Auburn quarterback Bo Nix had a solid outing and completed 16 of 27 passing for 233 yards with three touchdowns. It was one of Nix's best performances of his young career, but that is not exactly saying much. The Tigers are a running football team, yet they were stymied for just 91 yards on 30 attempts against Kentucky. Meanwhile, Nix is a very mediocre quarterback that completed just 56% passing for the entire season as a freshman in 2019.

The major problem for Auburn this week is that their offensive strengths meet the strength of Georgia's defense. The Bulldogs have been great against the run and have the speed up front to create a lot of pressure on Nix. I know most of the focus is on Georgia's offensive situation leading up to this week's game. However, I think that is an unnecessary distraction. Between George Pickens and running back Zamir White, the Bulldogs will find a way to move the football. The real advantage here is the Bulldogs and how they match-up against Auburn. I expect Georgia's defense to be the difference from start to finish.

Auburn vs. Georgia Prediction 10/3/20

I think this will be a very physical football game as both teams attempt to establish the run and play sound defense. Unfortunately for Auburn, the Bulldogs are more strongly suited to win this type of war. If Bennett gets the nod as he deserves, I like the Bulldogs even more!
