Betting Odds

Padres +110 / Diamondbacks -132

This game is the first of the series, and the Padres have won two in a row, and the Diamondbacks had their six-game win streak snapped with a loss in their last game.

In their last game, the Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 8-4 to take the series winning three of four games. In the series finale, San Diego scored eight runs on 13 hits and San Francisco scored four runs on seven hits.

The Diamondbacks saw their win streak come to an end in their last game losing to the L.A. Dodgers 4-3 in 11 innings. They were up 4-3 in the top of the 9th inning but gave up a solo HR in the inning and then gave up another solo HR in the 11th.

This season the Padres rank 26th in runs scored and 16th in team ERA and the Diamondbacks rank 9th in runs scored and 13th in team ERA.

Pitching Match-Up

San Diego: Cal Quantrill (6-5 3.99 ERA)

Arizona: Mike Leake (5-6 5.26 ERA)

Cal Quantrill is coming off, by far, his worst start to the season where he was lit up giving up eight earned runs on eight hits in four 1/3 innings in a 9-0 loss to the L.A. Dodgers. The Padres had won two in a row with him on the hill before losing his last two starts where he has given up 11 earned runs in 10 1/3 innings of work. Quantrill had not given up more than three earned runs in seven straight starts before his last one. He has not faced the Diamondbacks this season, and the Padres have lost his last two road starts where he gave up five earned runs in 11 innings of work and only received three runs of support.

Mike Leake is coming off his best start for the Diamondbacks after he came to them in a trade with the Seattle Mariners in early August. He made his 5th start for the club in his last outing giving up two earned runs on only four hits in seven 1/3 innings in a 3-2 win over the San Francisco Giants. Arizona had lost his previous three starts where he was not sharp at all giving up 17 earned runs in 16 innings. He gave up eight HR in his first three starts for the club but has not given up any in his last two starts. This start will be Leake’s first of the season against the Padres and in eight career appearances facing them he has an ERA of 3.30. In Leake’s five starts for the Diamondbacks, he is 1-2 with a less than stellar ERA of 6.59.

Team Info

While the Padres have won three of their last four games, they are out of the playoff picture 23.5 games out of first place in the NL West and nine games out of the 2nd NL Wild Card.

The San Diego pitching was solid in their last series taking three of four games from the Giants giving up only eight runs in the three wins.

The Diamondbacks have no chance to catch the L.A. Dodgers in the NL West but are only 3.5 games out of the 2nd Wild Card. The recent 6-game win streak helped in their quest for the post-season, and the schedule favors them, as in their remaining eight series' they only face two teams that currently have a winning record.

Arizona has lost seven of their last eight games against the Padres and the last time they faced them in May in San Diego they swept them in a three-game set. How they fare against the Padres the rest of the season will be vital in them making the playoffs, as starting with this game they face them nine more times including six times in their last nine games.

Key Injuries

Injuries keep piling up for the Padres, and C Francisco Mejia was recently put on the 10-day DL.

The D-Backs have not had many injuries this season, but they recently lost OF David Peralta, who is expected to miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury.

Padres at Diamondbacks Prediction 09/02/2019

The Diamondbacks are the team chasing a playoff spot and recently won six in a row, and the Padres have won two straight and three of their last four games. Quantrill was lit up in his previous start while solid in his few before that while Leake had a good previous outing while struggling in his last three outings. I think Quantrill will have the better start in this one while the San Diego lineup will get to Leake early and often. The Padres will get the win in this one with a solid all-around game winning their 3rd straight and sending the D-Backs to their 2nd straight loss.
