Tuesday’s baseball betting lines opened this game at right around a pick ‘em, with an over/under of 7.5 runs. Early betting action then edged Seattle into a -115 favorite.
Padres-Mariners MLB Betting Preview
San Diego just dropped two of three games at home to the Dodgers over the weekend, losing Sunday’s rubber match 11-2. The Padres then had Monday off.
Just before that San Diego took two of three games from Arizona but just before that it lost two of three to the Dodgers in Los Angeles. So the Padres are 1-2 over their last three series and 3-5 over their last eight games.
At 77-64 overall San Diego leads Milwaukee by two games in the battle for the No. 3 spot in the NL wild-card standings.
Seattle, meanwhile, just took two of three games at home from Atlanta, winning a crazy rubber match Sunday 8-7. The Mariners then also had Monday off.
Just before that Seattle lost two of three to the White Sox but just before that it swept three games from Cleveland. Going back a bit further the Mariners are 4-1 over their last four series and 12-4 over their last 16 games.
At 79-61 overall Seattle is now tied with Toronto for the lead in the AL wild-card race, a half-game ahead third-place Tampa Bay and six games clear of fourth-place Baltimore.
This series is the second meeting between these teams this season. Back in July the Mariners swept two games from the Padres at Petco Park.
Tuesday's Pitching Match-Up
Gilbert is 12/28 on quality starts this season, working on a run of three in a row. Last Tuesday he held the White Sox scoreless on five hits through six innings of a 3-0 Seattle victory. And over his last three starts he’s allowed just two runs and 15 hits through 18 1/3 innings, with one walk against 20 strikeouts.
The Mariners are 18-10 with Gilbert this season, 3-0 his last three times out.
In his only career start against San Diego, back in July of this season, Gilbert allowed two runs - one earned - and six hits through 5 1/3 innings of a 6-2 Seattle win.
Darvish is 17/26 on quality starts this year and three for his last four. Last Wednesday he allowed three runs, all on solo home runs, through six innings of a 6-3 Padres win over the Diamondbacks. And over his last four starts he’s allowed nine runs and 17 hits through 28 1/3 innings, with seven walks against 27 whiffs.
San Diego is 15-11 with Darvish this season, 3-0 his last three times out.
In his most recent start against the Mariners, in May of last season, Darvish allowed just one run through seven frames of a 9-2 Padres victory.
