ST. LOUIS: ADAM WAINWRIGHT (R) ERA: 2.15 W/L: 9-3
Two outstanding pitchers take the mound today in what should be a classic pitcher's duel.
Cole Hamels has held the opposition to no runs over his last 3 starts over 22 2/3 innings, He did allow 20 base runners, but was never in trouble striking out 24 batters! He hasn't faced St. Louis since April of last season when Philadelphia lost 4-3, but it was a quality start for the left hander pitching 7 innings allowing 3 runs on 5 hits. Batter vs. pitcher numbers favors Hamels although they are not extensive.
Wainwright has been as dominate as the Philly lefty for the most part, but he has been hit hard on occasion this season. Three starts back the Giants got to him for 7 runs in 4.1 innings and back in early May in Chicago the Cubs tagged him for 6 runs over 5 frames. He has pitched well against Philadelphia with 4 straight quality starts however 3 of those were back in 2010.
Neither one of these teams is in the top of the charts for any offensive categories.
The Phillies are the better scoring club with 4.01 runs per game compared to the Cardinals 3.68.
The Cardinals' batters hit for a higher average than the Phillies .250 to .244.
The Phillies have more power than Cardinals hitting 61 homeruns to St. Louis' 42 although slugging percentage is close with Philadelphia holding a 18 point edge.
