NYY -112/Mil +102

The Yankees continue their charge toward a division title while the Brewers continue their pursuit of a wild-card berth, heading into the opener of this three-game inter-league series in Milwaukee Friday night. Frankie Montas, a disappointment for his new team so far, gets the start on the mound for New York here against Adrian Houser for the Brew Crew.

MLB Betting Odds

Friday's baseball betting lines opened New York and Montas at around -135 over Milwaukee and Houser, with an over/under of 8.5 runs. Early betting action then dipped the Yanks to as low as -112 and the total down to 8 runs.

Yankees-Brewers MLB Betting Preview

New York just swept two games at Boston, winning 7-6 in 10 innings Tuesday, then 5-3 Wednesday. The Yankees then had Thursday off.

Just before that, New York took two of three games from Tampa Bay, and just before that, it took two of three from Minnesota. So the Yanks are 3-0 over their last three series and 8-2 over their last ten games.

At 87-56 overall, New York leads the AL East by 6.5 games over the second-place Rays but trails Houston by 6.5 games in the battle for the best record in the American League.

Meanwhile, Milwaukee split two games at St. Louis, winning Tuesday 8-4 but losing Wednesday 4-1. The Brewers then also had Thursday off.

Just before that, Milwaukee took two of three from Cincinnati, and just before that, it swept two games from San Francisco. So the Brewers are 2-0-1 over their last three series and 5-2 over their last seven games.

At 76-67 overall, Milwaukee is not going to catch the Cardinals in the NL Central race, but it's only a game and a half back of San Diego in the battle for the third and final NL wild-card spot.

This series is the first meeting between these former division rivals since the Brewers took two of three games from the Yanks at Yankee Stadium back in 2017.

Friday's Pitching Match-Up

Houser is just 4/18 on quality starts this season but going OK as of late. Last Saturday, he held the Reds to one run and one hit through six innings of a 5-1 Milwaukee victory. And over his last three outings, he's allowed four runs - two earned - and four hits through 13 innings.

The Brewers are only 7-11 with Houser this season, but that's probably a couple of games worse than they should be, based on his performances.

This will be Houser's first career start against the Yankees.

Montas is 10/26 on quality starts this year but 0/7 since becoming a Yankee back at the trade deadline. Last Friday against Tampa, he gave up four runs and nine hits through 5 2/3 innings of a 4-2 New York loss. But just before that, he held the Rays scoreless through five frames of a 2-1 Yankees win.

Oakland played 5-14 with Montas this season, although that certainly wasn't all his fault, while the Yanks are 3-4 with him, and that is, in good part, his doing.

This will be Montas' first career start against Milwaukee.

Splits With the Sticks

New York is batting .239 against right-handed pitching this season, with a .321 team OBP and a .419 team slugging percentage.

The Brewers are slashing .242/.320/.431 against right-handed pitching.

The Bullpens

The Milwaukee bullpen owns a 3.94 ERA this season, along with a 1.23 WHIP.

The Yankees pen owns a 2.94 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP.

MLB Betting Trends

New York is 37-34 on the road this season and 63-41 against right-handed starters.

Milwaukee is 39-27 at home and 51-44 against right-handed starters.

Totals Report

  • The Under is 72-67 in Yankees games this season.
  • The Over is 68-64 in Brewers games.
  • The Over is 32-30 at American Family Field this season.
  • The Under is a combined 26-16 with Houser and Montas this season.

Yankees at Brewers Free Pick 9/16/22

We're calling this pitching match-up a wash, but New York owns an edge in the bullpen comparison. Also, the Yankees seem to be regaining some mojo following a rough stretch, and the bats are alive, scoring 32 runs over their last four games. Milwaukee, meanwhile, is one of the most inconsistent teams in Baseball. We're betting New York Friday night at a very reasonable price.
