Chicago Cubs vs. New York Mets Pick
This game is the first in this series, and the Cubs have lost three straight losing to the Washington Nationals 7-5 in their last game. In that game, the Cubs gave up two runs in the 9th inning, and they scored five runs on seven hits, and the Nats scored seven runs on 14 hits.
The Mets have also lost three in a row coming off a series where the Atlanta Braves swept them. In their last game, they lost 2-1 even though they had seven hits and held the Braves to only three hits.
This season the Cubs rank 14th in runs scored and 7th in team ERA and the Mets rank 15th in runs scored and 11th in team ERA.
Chicago: Yu Darvish (4-6 4.63 ERA)
New York: Marcus Stroman (7-11 3.18 ERA)
In Darvish’s last start he was not sharp giving up six earned runs on seven hits, including three HR, in five 1/3 innings, but the lineup saved him in a 12-11 win over the San Francisco Giants. He was lights out in his previous start pitching seven scoreless innings, but the bullpen blew it in a 7-5 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. Darvish faced the Mets once this season at home and gave up four runs in six innings in a 5-4 Chicago loss. This season Darvish is 2-3 with an ERA of 3.75 on the road, but the Cubs have dropped his last five road starts.
In Stroman’s last start he only went four innings leaving early with a minor injury, but only gave up one earned run on five hits in a 4-3 win over the Cleveland Indians. He is making his 5th start of the season for the Mets after a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays. The Mets have won all four of his starts, and after giving up seven runs in his first two starts for his new club, he has only given up three runs in his last two starts where he has totaled nine 1/3 innings. Stroman left his previous start early with a hamstring injury but will get the start in this game. In four starts for the Mets, he is 1-0 with an ERA of 4.58.

Key Betting Trends

- CHI has an Over history of 3-1-1 in their previous five games
- NY is 13-4 in their last 17 home games
- NY is 21-8 in their last 29 overall
- NY has an Under record of 4-1 in their previous five games
Needless to say, the 3-game losing by the Cubs has not helped their playoff push. They are in 2nd place in the NL Central 2.5 games back of the St. Louis Cardinals, who are 8-2 in their last ten games. Chicago holds the 2nd Wild Card slot four games back of the Washington Nationals and is only up one game on the Phillies and two games on the Mets.
In getting swept by the Washington Nationals in their last series, the Cubs were outscored 23-10. Before that sweep, Chicago had won five in a row. In their first series facing the Mets in the first half at home, they split the four-game set.
The Mets were also swept in their last series facing the Atlanta Braves where in Games 1 and three they lost 2-1 and in Game 2 lost 9-5. They are out of the NL East race 11.5 games back of the Braves, and the Wild Card is their only chance to make the playoffs.
New York rookie Pete Alonson has already set the rookie HR mark for the Mets, needs one more HR to set the overall record for the club, and in the four-game set facing Chicago earlier this season, he went deep three times in the four games.
Key Player Injuries
Anthony Rizzo missed the last game for the Cubs with back stiffness, and he is listed as Day-to-Day for this game. C Wilson Contreras and 2B Daniel Descalso are both on the DL, and each could possibly return to the lineup in early September.
OF Robinson Cano is still on the DL and he may return this season, and Nido Thomas was placed on the 10-Day DL on August 24th with a concussion and is scheduled to return to the New York lineup in early September.
