Astros -160/Diamondbacks +140

Houston won the opener of this three-game interleague series Tuesday night and shoots for the series victory when the teams meet again Wednesday evening. How are we playing this game with our free MLB pick?

MLB Betting Odds

Wednesday's MLB betting odds opened Houston and McCullers at around -175 over Arizona and Ray, with an over/under of 9.5 runs. Early betting action then dipped the Astros about 15 cents, to around -160.

Houston could also be found getting around +100, giving the run and a half on the MLB betting run line.

Astros vs. Diamondbacks Set-Up

Houston grabbed the opener of this series Tuesday night 8-2, winning as a -135 favorite on the MLB betting line and covering against the run line at a price of +115. The Astros scored one run in the top of the first inning Tuesday, two more in the second, then broke it open with five in the fifth, on their way toward victory.

Just prior to this series, Houston took two of three games from the Angels in Anaheim over the weekend.

Arizona, meanwhile, dropped three of four games at home to the Dodgers over the weekend.

At 6-4, the Astros trail division-leading Oakland by a half-game in the AL West.

At 3-8, the D'Backs already trail division-leading Colorado by 5.5 games in the NL West.

These teams last met back in 2018, when they split six games.

Wednesday's Starting Arms

Lefty Ray is 0/2 on quality starts this season. Last Thursday, he got clipped for five runs on five hits and six walks through 4 2/3 innings of a 6-3 loss to the Dodgers. And five days before that, he gave up three runs on four hits and three walks through just 3 2/3 innings of a 5-1 loss to San Diego.

Last year Ray hit just 11/33 on quality starts; Arizona played 20-13 with Ray.

This will be Ray's first start vs. Houston since 2018, when he held the Astros to two runs and two hits through 5 1/3 innings of a 4-2 Arizona win.

McCullers is one/two on quality starts this year. Last Friday, he gave up four runs on six hits and four walks through four innings against the Angels, although Houston won that game anyway 9-6. But five days before that, he held Seattle to two runs and five hits through six frames of a 7-2 Astros victory.

McCullers is coming back this season after missing all of last season recuperating from Tommy John surgery. This will be McCullers' first start against Arizona since 2016, and that's already a long time ago.

Wednesday's Batting Splits

Houston is batting .265 against left-handed pitching this season, with a .354 team OBP and a .418 team slugging percentage. The Astros have also scored at least six runs in seven of their ten games this season.

Arizona is batting just .191/.281/.275 vs. right-handed pitching this season. The Diamondbacks have also been held to four runs total over their last three games.

MLB Betting Trends

  • Houston played 47-34 on the road last season.
  • Arizona played 44-37 at home last season.
  • Houston played an ML-best 39-11 vs. left-handed starters last season.
  • Arizona played 60-58 vs. right-handed starters last season.

Totals Report

  • Overs are 6-3 in Astros games this season.
  • Unders are 7-4 in Diamondbacks games this season.
  • Unders played 38-36 in games played at Chase Field last season.

Astros vs. Diamondbacks Prediction 8/5/20

McCullers owns the edge in the pitching match-up, and Houston also holds a big advantage with the sticks. So we like the Astros here. And in knowing Houston will bat nine times, we'll gamble a bit and give the run and a half with the Astros against the run line.
