Super Bowl V RecapBetting Odds:
Super Bowl 5 Game Recap It remains in the record books as Super Bowl V, but to many, it was Blooper Bowl I. Dallas and Baltimore combined for 11 turnovers and the Colts won 16-13 despite turning the ball over seven times. In the end, it was a 32-yard field goal by rookie kicker Jim O'Brien that decided Super Bowl V, a game which highlighted a pair of quarterback controversies and saw the MVP award go to a defensive player on the losing team. The Cowboys were up 13-6 at the half, but interceptions set up a Baltimore score and O'Brien's decisive kick in the fourth quarter. Dallas managed with the Roger Staubach-Craig Morton controversy, but failed to win as 2.5-point favorites in Super Bowl V. Dallas lost fullback Calvin Hill (father of NBA star Grant Hill) to a leg injury late in the year and Earl Morrall relieved injured Johnny Unitas for Baltimore. The lone Colt TD pass was another bizarre play, as the Unitas chuck bounced off receiver Eddie Hinton's hands, off Dallas defensive back Mel Renfro, and into the hands of John Mackey. Mackey ran another 45 yards to score on a wild 75-yard play. The Super Bowl V MVP went to Cowboy Chuck Howley. He snared two Colt passes in becoming the first defensive player and the first player from a losing team to be named MVP. Super Bowl V was also the first championship game played on artificial turf at the Orange Bowl in Miami on Jan. 17, 1971. Final Score: 16-13
