Super Bowl 29 Game Recap

Tired of losing the NFC title game to the Cowboys the previous two seasons, San Francisco stocked up on defensive free agents and handed the quarterback reins to Steve Young.

Both were controversial, but both worked as the 49ers won Super Bowl XXIX in a 49-26 rout over the San Diego Chargers.

Young, who was named Super Bowl XXIX MVP, passed for six touchdowns, as the 49ers became the first team to win five Super Bowls.

He didn't wasted any time getting to work as he found Jerry Rice for a 44-yard touchdown pass less than two minutes into the game. They led 14-0 a few minutes later when Young hit Ricky Watters for a 51-yard touchdown pass.

By halftime, Young had already thrown four touchdown passes in a year when he threw 35 regular-season strikes and was named NFL MVP.

Watters scored three touchdowns, as did Rice, who caught 10 passes for 149 yards. San Diego wanted to rely on Natrone Means, who rushed for 1,350 yards during the regular season, but he was limited to 33 yards on 13 tries as the Chargers fell way behind early.

The 49ers covered a mammoth 18.5-point spread in what was the eleventh straight for NFC teams over AFC teams in the Super Bowl.

San Francisco had been criticized for 'buying' a championship by bringing in Charles Mann, Richard Dent, Ken Norton, Rickey Jackson and Deion Sanders. The defensive additions helped improve their play against the run as they tried to knock off Dallas.

Final Score: 49-26
Winning Side Bet: Dallas -18.5
