Super Bowl 26 Game Recap

Super Bowl XXVI was third time lucky for Washington and second time misery for Buffalo.

Mark Rypien threw for nearly 300 yards and two touchdowns as the Redskins covered as seven-point favorites against the Bills in Super Bowl XXVI.

It was the third Super Bowl in the past decade for Washington and it wasn't really as close as 37-24 score might indicate. Rypien, the Super Bowl XXVI MVP, had the Redskins ahead 37-10, before the Jim Kelly-led Bills scored two touchdowns in garbage time.

Rypien completed 18 of 33 passes, including scoring strikes to Earnest Byner and Gary Clark.

The score could have been much worse, if not for the early failures of Washington in the red zone. They converted three drives into just three points, they still led 17-0 at halftime. It was 24-0 just 16 seconds into the second half, when Kurt Gouveia picked Kelly and ran it to the 2-yard line. Gerald Riggs punched it in for his second touchdown of the game.

His counterpart, Bills running back Thurman Thomas, had led the AFC with 1,407 yards but managed just 13 yards on 10 carries. He had only 27 yards on four receptions.

Clark had seven catches for 114 yards and Art Monk added seven for 113 for the Redskins. Washington head man Joe Gibbs became just the third head coach to win three Super Bowls.

Final Score: 37-24
