Super Bowl 25 Game Recap

Wide right.

Super Bowl XXV will be remembered for Scott Norwood's missed 46-yard field goal attempt as time expired, but it was a classic battle of the high-powered, no-huddle offense of the Buffalo Bills and the rugged defense of the New York Giants.

The score - 20-19 - is almost forgotten in the gloom of the missed kick.

New York followed its ball-control offense playbook to the letter, chewing up more than 40 minutes in time of possession. It kept Jim Kelly and the Bills offense - which tallied 95 points in two previous playoff games leading to Super Bowl XXV - off the field.

In one drive in the third quarter, the Giants kept the ball for nearly 10 minutes before Super Bowl XXV MVP Ottis Anderson rumbled in for the touchdown. There was little time for Kelly to perform his magic - the Bills had the ball just eight minutesafer halftime - but he still gave his team a shot at winning.

Giants quarterback Jeff Hostetler gave New York and coach Bill Parcells a 17-12 lead in the third quarter after Buffalo moved into an early 12-3 advantage. Hostetler hit Stephen Baker for a 14-yard scoring play at the half to make it 12-10.

Running back Thurman Thomas scampered 31 yards for a score on the opening play of the fourth quarter and Buffalo led 19-17. A Giant field goal by Matt Bahr made it 20-19, before Norwood's miss ensured the score would not change.

Anderson ran 21 times for 102 yards to win Super Bowl XXV MVP honors.

It would be the first of four consecutive Super Bowl losses for Kelly and the Bills. None would hurt more.

Final Score: 20-19
Winning Side Bet: New York Giants +7
Winning Total Bet: Under 40.5
