Super Bowl XXIII RecapBetting Odds:
Super Bowl 23 Game Recap It was a game of firsts, thirds and lasts. Jerry Rice won his first MVP award, the San Francisco 49ers won their third title of the 1980s and head coaching legend Bill Walsh coached his last game. It all happened as NFC champion San Francisco beat Cincinnati 20-16 in Super Bowl XXIII. The 49ers almost didn't become the first three-time Super Bowl winner from the NFC, as Cincy led 16-13 in the final minutes. But Joe Montana led the 49ers on an 11-play, 92-yard drive the culminated in a 10-yard TD catch by John Taylor as the 49ers won Super Bowl XXIII. They also won Super Bowls XVI and XIX. League MVP Boomer Esiason was unable to lead the Bengals to victory, despite the halftime 3-3 tie and the late lead. Bengal fans will always wonder if it would have been different had running back Stanley Wilson not been caught with drugs in his room the night before the big game. Cincinnati led 13-6 on a 93-yard kickoff return for a score by Stanford Jennings late in the third quarter. But Montana answered that challenge with an 85-yard drive and his scoring pass to Super Bowl XXIII MVP Jerry Rice. Rice had 11 catches for a Super Bowl-record 215 yards, while his partner completed 23 of 36 passes for a Super Bowl-record 357 yards and two touchdowns. Final Score: 20-16
