Super Bowl XXII RecapBetting Odds:
Super Bowl 22 Game Recap There were plenty of subplots to Super Bowl XXII. Doug Williams became the first black quarterback to start in a Super Bowl. Denver was back for a second crack at the title. And Washington had emerged from a tough NFC pack in the strike-shortened 1987 season, thanks mainly to the playoff exploits of Minnesota, who defeated the 12-3 Saints and 13-2 49ers before falling to the edskins in the NFC title game. And John Elway passed for the quickest touchdown in Super Bowl history and the Broncos led 10-0. That was all before Williams engineered the biggest second quarter in Super Bowl history and a 42-10 Super Bowl XXII victory. Washington scored 35 points in that quarter to blow open Super Bowl XXII and cruise to victory over the favored Broncos, who had themselves benefited from some playoff charity when Cleveland lost to them on a play known as The Fumble. Williams, named Super Bowl XXII MVP, fired scoring passes of 80- and 50-yards to wide receiver Ricky Sanders and flung a 27-yard toss to wide receiver Gary Clark. Tight end Clint Didier also got in on the act. Washington scored five times in just 18 plays covering just 5:47. Sanders finished with 193 yards on nine catches, breaking the previous Super Bowl record of 161 yards set by Steeler Lynn Swann in Super Bowl X. Rookie running back Timmy Smith carried 22 carries for a Super Bowl-record 204 yards. That broke the old record of 191 yards set by Marcus Allen of the Raiders in Super Bowl XVIII. He also scored twice on runs of 58 and four yards. Washington's six touchdowns and 602 total yards gained also set Super Bowl records. The Redskins also intercepted three Elway passes and sacked him five times. Final Score: 42-10
