Super Bowl 16 Game Recap

Joe Montana's third year in the NFL yielded the first of four Super Bowls for the San Francisco 49ers.

Ray Wersching booted four field goals and Montana was efficient in building a 20-0 halftime cushion in Super Bowl XVI. Cincinnati rallied after the break, but the final was 26-21 at the Silverdome in Michigan.

Montana, voted Super Bowl XVI MVP, led the 49ers on two long scoring drives - an 11-play, 68-yard drive and another that stretched 92 yards. The latter culminated in an 11-yard TD pass to Earl Cooper.

Ken Anderson led the Bengals back, completions 25 of 34 passes, but Wersching added two more field goals in the fourth-period field goals to extend the 49er lead to 26-14.

The Bengals managed to score on an Anderson-to-Ross 3-yard pass with only 16 seconds remaining. Ross set a Super Bowl record with 11 receptions for 104 yards.

Cincinnati outgained the 49ers 356 to 275, making Super Bowl XVI the first where the losing team generated more yardage on offense.
