NHL Bettors Cashing In

The Ottawa Senators have won quite a few more games than they've lost this season, and as a result they have one of the league's best records. So what would your record be if you had bet on the Senators every time they had been pegged as the underdog so far this year? Well, your record would be 1-0. That's right, the Sens had only been listed as the underdog once through 48 games this season, and they managed to win that contest. A nice stat for them, but it means throwing hockey wagers at the Senators hasn't been especially lucrative.

Now, if you had placed bets on the Dallas Stars every time they had been pegged as the underdog so far this season, you'd have a little extra bulk in your billfold. The Stars have been listed as the underdog 18 times in 51 games, and have walked away with victories in 14 of those contests. That means Dallas has a much higher winning percentage as an underdog (14-4) than they do as a favorite (20-13). Another good underdog option this season has been the New York Rangers. The Rangers have picked up 11 wins in 20 games as a dog this season; that's not at the Stars' level, but if you had bet on the Rangers in the right spots you could have still nicely cashed in.

At the other end of the spectrum, the St. Louis Blues are usually listed as the underdog for a good reason - they stink. In their 44 dog games, the Blues have eight wins. Of course, the Blues are only 3-2 as the favored team this season, so it's probably best to toss your hockey wagers in another direction regardless.

The Blues, however, have paid off for one group of gamblers - those that have placed bets on the OVER in St. Louis games. Not paid off well, mind you, as the Blues are only 26-22-1 OU through 49 games, but it's something. In fact, contrast that OU record with that of the high-scoring Ottawa Senators. The Sens are merely 23-23-2 OU on the season; their offensive output isn't an issue, but their stingy defense keeps combined scores down, and their reputation keeps posted totals up. So yes, Ottawa can score. But don't get fooled into thinking you can ride Alfredsson, Spezza, Heatley, et al. to bushels of OVER cash.
