The SEC’s Arkansas Razorbacks will try and end their season on a high note against the ACC’s Virginia Tech Hokies in this year’s Belk Bowl at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte on Thursday, Dec. 29. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.

Arkansas vs. Virginia Tech Game Overview

The Razorbacks stumbled down the stretch with just two straight-up victories over their last five games to fall to 7-5 overall. They also failed to cover in three of those contests to end the season 5-7 against the spread. The total stayed UNDER 72 in a season-ending 28-24 loss to Missouri as eight-point road favorites after going OVER the closing line in three of their previous four games. Arkansas was an even 4-4 ATS when closing as an underdog this year.

Arkansas brings a potent passing attack into this matchup behind junior quarterback Austin Allen. He completed 61.4 percent of his 370 passing attempts for 3,152 yards and 23 touchdowns. Drew Morgan was on the receiving end of 61 of those completions for 664 yards and three scores. Rawleigh Williams III led the Razorbacks’ ground game with 1,326 rushing yards and 12 touchdown runs on 233 carries. This trio of team leaders helped Arkansas average a solid 30.8 points per game.

Virginia Tech is coming off one of its most productive seasons in years behind first-year head coach Justin Fuente. The Hokies went 9-4 SU with a 6-2 run to the ACC’s Coastal Division title. They went on to give Clemson a tough battle in the conference championship by covering as 10.5-point underdogs in a 42-35 loss. Virginia Tech went 7-6 ATS and the total went OVER in eight of its 13 games this year.

This is another offense that has some firepower behind duel threat Jerod Evans. He threw for 3,309 yards and 27 touchdowns while completing 63.5 percent of his 389 passing attempts. He also led the Hokies in rushing with 759 yards and 10 scores on 182 attempts. Their ground game also has some solid depth with four different players rushing for at least 240 yards. Virginia Tech was 34th in the nation in scoring with 34.8 points a game. It was also one of the top teams in the nation on the other side of the ball behind a defense that closed out the season with a points-allowed average of 22.7.

Arkansas Razorbacks vs. Virginia Tech Hokies Prediction

The Razorbacks were one of the few offenses to have some level of success against Alabama this season in a 49-30 loss so I would expect them to be able to put some points on the board in this matchup.

Virginia Tech may not have the greatest track record in recent bowl games, but this is a whole new program under the guidance of Fuente as head coach. Given what we have already seen from this team, the Hokies should also have their fair share of opportunities to light up the scoreboard.

In what should be one of the more entertaining bowl games on this year’s schedule, my “best bet” pick in this one would be the OVER on the current 61.5-point total line.
