Kyle Larson joined an elite group of drivers with multiple point-race victories this season by winning last Sunday’s race at Michigan. Chase Elliott came close to winning his first career Cup Series event by taking second and Joey Logano finished third. My top-valued pick almost paid off at +1800 betting odds with Denny Hamlin taking fourth.

The following is a look at a few of the top favorites to win this Sunday’s race at Sonoma along with my top value pick based on betting odds provided by 5Dimes.

The road course at Sonoma is a great change of pace for the traditional tear around the oval that happens almost every other week during the Cup Series season. It also provides an edge to the drivers that do have some experience with this style of racing. Kyle Busch is a threat to win behind the wheel of any type of race car and his betting odds to win his first point race of the season this Sunday have been set at +500. The No. 18 Toyota has been shutout in the first 15 races on this year’s Cup Series schedule, but this team has come close to winning a number of times with five finishes in the top five. Busch has two career victories at Sonoma with the last one coming in 2015.

Martin Truex Jr. is second in the current standings with 635 total points and he is one of just four drivers with multiple point-race victories on the 2017 racing resume. Add in some road course experience to this current form and you can see why his odds to win as a co-favorite are also set at +500. With last week’s sixth-place run at Michigan, the No. 78 Toyota has not finished higher than sixth in the last five weeks. Truex has also raced well at Sonoma lately with a victory here in 2013 and a fifth-place finish in last season’s race.

The Cup Series driver with probably the most experience on road courses in Sunday’s field would be AJ Allmendinger. This is reflected in his +650 odds to win on Sunday as the third-favorite on the list. Driving the No. 47 Chevrolet, he has yet to be factor in any of the first 15 point-race events this year with just one finish in the top five at Daytona to start the new season on a high note. This is one of two road races on the schedule where his past skills actually do justify these lofty odds. Allmendinger has never won this race, but he has been able to qualify first or second over the past three years.

Toyota/Save Mart 350 Prediction

The one driver at longer odds that caught my eye for this race would be Kyle Larson at +1200 to win. When you are hot, you are hot no matter what kind of track you are racing on. His inexperience on a road course cannot be completely discounted, but the momentum that the No. 42 Chevrolet racing team brings into this race cannot be ignored. With last week’s victory at Michigan, Larson has placed first or second in almost half the races he has run. This will be his fourth career trip around this road course and he has finished higher each and every run including a 12th-place finish last year.
