Kobalt 400 Favorites and Top Value Pick

Brad Keselowski made his presence in the Monster Energy Cup Series felt early this season with last week’s victory at Atlanta. Kyle Larson turned in a solid performance in second place and Matt Kenseth worked his way into third. My top-valued pick was Dale Earnhardt Jr. but he slipped all the way to 30th place in the final race results.

The following is a look at a few of the top favorites to win this Sunday’s race at Las Vegas along with my top value pick based on betting odds provided by MyBookie.

Race Favorites

Kevin Harvick leads NASCAR’s Monster Energy Cup standings with 90 points after two races under the new racing format despite posting just one Top 10 finish. He comes into Las Vegas as a +500 favorite to build on that early lead with a win. Under the new rules, additional points are awarded for winning individual race segments and the No. 4 Chevrolet has managed to lead a combined 342 laps in the first two events including 292 laps last week at Atlanta. Harvick finished seventh in last year’s race in Las Vegas after winning this event in 2015.

The second-favorite to win Sunday’s race is last week’s winner Brad Keselowski at +600 betting odds. He was also one of the top favorites to win at Daytona, but a wreck ended his day at 143 laps. The No. 2 Ford led 23 laps of last week’s race and managed to take the lead for good with just six laps left to go. When it comes to Keselowski’s recent performance at this week’s track it is easy to see why he is near the top of MyBookie’s list. He has finished seventh or better in his last four Cup events here including trips to Victory Lane in both 2014 and in last season’s race.

There is a group of four drivers at +700 odds to win including Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch, Joey Logano and Chase Elliott. Of the four, the best value in my book would be with Johnson as the defending Cup Champion. The No. 48 Chevrolet has had its share of problems in the first two races and right now this team is buried in the standings with just 24 points and two runs outside the top 10. However, the annual West Coast swing out to his native California has always been one of Johnson’s best runs of the season. He finished third at Las Vegas in 2016 and over the course of his career he has posted four victories here in a Cup race.

Nascar Kobalt 500 Prediction

My top-valued pick for Sunday’s race at +1200 betting odds is Matt Kenseth. He was a victim of one of the many wrecks that plagued this year’s Daytona 500, but the No. 20 Toyota stayed clear of any trouble last Sunday to return to form with that third-place finish. Anytime I can get Kenseth at longer odds it is worth a play given his proven ability to stay on the lead lap for the majority of the races he runs. Weighing down his odds a bit this week is a spotty record at this track that includes a 37th-place finish last season, but I am more focused on his three previous victories here.
