MMA WEC44 Preview

Sports Betting Preview

It’s a busy week for MMA betting with WEC 44 on tap tonight and the episode of ShoMMA: Strikeforce Challengers on Friday night.

WEC 44: Brown vs. Aldo is on tonight at The Pearl at the Palms in Las Vegas, Nevada. For the casual MM fan who may not know what WEC is, it stands for World Extreme Cagefighting and it’s the sister promotion of UFC, focusing on lighter weight classes. If that doesn’t immediately excite then you should also know that lighter weight classes usually means more knockouts.

The main event tonight is a Featherweight championship bout between title holder Mike Brown and challenger Jose Aldo. This will be Brown’s third title defense after two previous successful bouts. He’s also won 10 consecutive fights. He last defended the championship at WEC 41 in June against Urijah Faber in a rematch. Brown took the title from Faber initially and he held his own in the rematch, winning by unanimous decision. Brown enters the fight with a lifetime MMA record of 22-4 with four wins by knockout and 12 by submission.

The challenger Jose Aldo should give Brown a real test to keep his title. Aldo has gained a reputation as a fierce striker with 10 of his 15 career MMA wins coming by knockout. Aldo has an eight-fight winning streak going and he also last fought at WEC 41. That night he took down Cub Swanson insanely quick with a KO only eight seconds into the first round.

Because of Aldo’s ability to end a fight with one quick strike the oddsmakers at Bodog are giving him a pretty good chance of upsetting Brown. The champion Brown is of course the favorite, but not by much at -130. Brown comes in at even money.

MMA Odds – Strikeforce Challengers

The fifth episode of ShoMMA airs Friday night with five bouts on the televised card. Among the five fights is a women’s bout between Kim Couture and Kerry Vera. Couture is the ex-wife of UFC legend Randy Couture and Friday’s bout will be only her third MMA fight. In her two previous fights she is 1-1 with the one win by knockout.

Vera also has a previous connection to the MMA world, as she is married to UFC veteran Brandon Vera. She’s also a newcomer to MMA with a 1-1 career record with her lone win coming by decision. Coincidentally, Randy Couture and Brandon Vera just faced each other in the UFC last weekend and Couture came out on top by unanimous decision.

The rest of the Strikeforce Friday night lineup includes the following:

Welterweight – Tyron Woodley vs. Rudy Bears
Middleweight – Bobby Voelker vs. Erik Apple
Light Heavyweight – Aaron Rosa vs. Rafael Cavalcante
Middleweight – Kevin Casey vs. Chad Vance

Look for full Strikeforce odds to become available later in the week.
