Two teams make their debuts under their new head coaches when the Raiders host the Vikings for a preseason game Sunday afternoon in Las Vegas. The Raiders actually made the playoffs last season but made a change at HC anyway. Minnesota, meanwhile, just couldn’t get out of the doldrums under the defensive-minded previous regime and now looks to infuse some excitement with an offensive-minded approach.

NFL Betting Lines

The Week 1 NFL exhibition betting odds opened the Raiders as 2.5-point favorites over the Vikings, with an over/under of right around 34. Early betting action then goosed Las Vegas two points to -4.5 and that total three points to 37.

Vikings-Raiders NFL Betting Preview

Minnesota played 8-9 last season and missed the playoffs for the second straight year. The Vikings started 0-2 last season, later battled their way back to .500 at 7-7 and within a sniff of the playoffs but lost their next two games to the Rams and Packers to fall out of contention.

When it was all over, Minnesota then canned its head coach. So the Vikings begin this season going through the learning curve that comes with a new staff and new systems. Great.

Over the off-season, personnel-wise, Minnesota added free-agent LB Za’Darius Smith and used five of its first six picks in the draft on defense. So a unit that ranked 27th and 30th in the League overall the last two seasons should be on the improve.

The Vikings are lined as the second choice to win the NFC North this season at +280, playing against a wins over/under of 9.5. Minnesota is also getting +1800 to win the NFC and +4000 to win the Super Bowl.

Las Vegas, meanwhile, played 10-7 last year and made the playoffs for only the second time in the last 20 years. The Raiders started 3-0 last season, lost their next two games, then fired Coach Gruden for sending some mean e-mails. Las Vegas later fell to 6-7 but won its last four games, three as underdogs, to sneak into the postseason as the five seed in the AFC. The Raiders then lost a tough wild-card game at Cincinnati 26-19 when they couldn’t score on four plays from the Bengals’ 9-yard line in the final minute.

Over the off-season, Las Vegas let go interim HC Bisaccia and brought in supposed offensive genius McDaniels, who went 11-17 as Denver’s HC back in 2009-10. The Raiders also traded for the best WR in the League, former Packer Davante Adams, and signed LB Chandler Jones from Arizona.

Las Vegas already has one preseason game under its belt, a 27-11 Hall of Fame game victory over Jacksonville last week. The Raiders led that game 20-0 at the half over the hapless Jaguars and eventually ran the ball 33 times for 159 yards. Meanwhile, backup quarterbacks Jarrett Stidham, Nick Mullens, and Chase Garbers combined to hit 20/32 passes for 162 yards and zero interceptions.

The Raiders are actually the last choice on this season’s AFC West board at +650, playing against a wins O/U of 8.5. Vegas is also getting +2200 to win the AFC and +4000 to win the Super Bowl.

As far as the quarterbacking for this game goes, starters Kirk Cousins will not play for Minnesota, and Derek Carr probably won’t play for the Raiders. The Vikes will go with back-ups Sean Mannion and Kellen Mond, while LV will use that Stidham-Mullens-Garbers combo.

These teams last met three seasons ago, a 34-14 Minnesota victory.
Vikings vs. Raiders Prediction ATS 8/14/22

Both these teams are under new head coaches, but Las Vegas is the more established outfit at the moment. The Raiders made the playoffs last year and are expected to contend for the playoffs this season. Therefore our guess is Vegas probably cares more about avoiding injuries this exhibition season than winning games. Minnesota, meanwhile, has more holes to fill and might try to use this preseason to create a winning atmosphere. Motivation means a ton in exhibition games, and we believe the Vikings are the more motivated team in this spot. We’ll take the Vikes and the points.
