2007 Breeders' Filles & Mares Turf

The Filly & Mare Turf has been run eight times, with U.S. based and European runners each winning four runnings.

Two of the wins for the Europeans came from Ouija Board, who won last year's race as well as taking top honors in 2004. She was the beaten favorite in 2005, coming up 1 ½ lengths short of Intercontinental, who pulled off the upset for trainer Bobby Frankel, returning $32.20 for the win.

The Graham Motion trained Film Maker has the distinction of finishing in the money three years in a row without picking up a win. She ran second in 2004, third in 2005, and finished second last year.

Favorites have done well in the race, winning four of the eight runnings. The average win mutuel is $14.20.

Here is a look at the top contenders for this year's Filly & Mare Turf:

Nashoba's Key: This brilliant filly has a perfect record, seven victories in her seven career starts including four graded stakes. The four year old filly is trained by Carla Gaines and will be ridden by 17 year old jockey Joe Talamo. All of her starts have come in Southern California, her latest a smart win in the Grade 1 Yellow Ribbon over a talented Citronnade, who is a multiple graded stakes winner. Passage of Time: She is one of four European invaders this year. She is a lightly raced three year old, with just seven career starts. She has a Group 1 win on her resume, taking the Criterium de Saint Cloud as a two year old. IN her last start she came back off a 3 ½ month layoff and checked in third in the Group 1 Prix Vermeille, which should set her up for a top notch effort in the Filly & Mare Turf. Honey Ryder: The Todd Pletcher trainee finished third in this race last year, beaten 2 ½ lengths for the top spot by the brilliant Ouija Board. She came up with a dull effort last out in the Grade 1 Beverly D. at Arlington Park, checking in a non threatening sixth. She was also not her best in the Beverly D. last year, finishing fourth, so perhaps she does not care much for the Arlington turf course. Simply Perfect: She was not her best in her most recent start, a fourth place finish in the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket. She was a good third in her previous start in the Group 1 Prix d'Astarte behind the very classy winner Darjina. She is a two time Group 1 winner and while she is just 1 for 5 this year, she looks capable of moving forward off her last start, which would put her in the mix here.
