The weekend hockey slate gets started early Saturday afternoon with an Original Six tilt between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings.
The Blackhawks have won their last two games after taking care of Minnesota 5-2 Thursday night as a -125 favorite. Dave Bolland continued his recent hot streak with a two goals and an assist to give him six points in his last three games. Viktor Stalberg also found the back of the net in the win, giving him four goals in his last two games.
Detroit is sporting a 3-2 record in their last five games, but picked up a win last time out after edging Phoenix 3-2 in a shootout on Thursday night as a -185 favorite. Johan Franzen and Valtteri Filppula scored in regulation for Detroit and Henrik Zetterberg netted the shootout winner.
The Wing's win on Thursday night was their 13th straight at Joe Louis Arena. Detroit hasn't lost at home since November 3. Oddly enough the one team Detroit has trouble with at home is Chicago. The Blackhawks have won their last five games at Detroit. The Wings and Blackhawks clashed twice this season already, both in Chicago with each winning a game by a score of 3-2.
Pick: Chicago 3 – Detroit 2
The Minnesota Wild will try to breakout of a torrid slump Saturday when they head to St. Louis to face the Blues. Minnesota, who once owned the best record in the NHL just over a month ago, has dropped to eighth in the West after winning only two of their last 14 games. During that miserable run they've scored more than three goals only three times. On Thursday night they were shellacked by Chicago 5-2 as a +165 underdog. Playing on the road has also been killing the Wild, as they have lost their last eight away from home.
The Blues had been rolling before falling to Vancouver 3-2 in overtime on Thursday as a -105 favorite. That loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Blues. Jason Arnott scored both goals for St. Louis, while Brian Elliott allowed three goals on 21 shots.
The Wild are 2-0 against the Blues so far this season with a pair of wins at home against St. Louis in November. In their last seven games against St. Louis the Wild are 6-1 so they could be worth taking a chance on as the underdog on Saturday night.
Pick: Minnesota 3 – St. Louis 2
Two of the leagues hottest teams square off in a great East vs. West matchup Saturday night when the Philadelphia Flyers visit the Nashville Predators. The Flyers have won four of their last five and are coming off a 3-2 win over the Islanders Thursday night as a -140 favorite. Sergei Bobrovsky made his second straight start for Philly and made 33 saves in the win.
The Predators have won three in a row and six of their last seven games. On Thursday night they clipped Colorado 3-2 in overtime as a -165 favorite. David Legwand netted a pair of goals for Nashville including the game-winner in OT.
In their last 11 games at home the Predators have been rolling with a 9-2 record. Nashville is 3-2 in their last five versus the Flyers which includes a 2-0 mark in their last two homes games.
Pick: Nashville 4 – Philadelphia 3
