The San Diego Chargers will look to hold onto at least a share of the lead in the AFC West when they face-off against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in front of a prime-time audience on Monday Night Football. The kick-off is slated for 8:30 and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
San Diego appeared to have avoided the slow start that has plagued it over the past few seasons, but despite the 4-2 record straight-up, it is just 2-4 against the spread and has barely gotten by a few teams it was expected to easily beat. Last week, the Chargers let one slip away as they blew a 21-10 lead at the half over New York, to lose 27-21 as one-point road favorites. The total stayed ‘under’ the 43-point line in this game and is 3-3 on the year.
One area of concern has to be the inconsistent play of quarterback Philip Rivers through the first six games of the season. He has completed 64.7 percent of his passes for 1,715 yards, but has thrown two more interceptions (9) than touchdowns (7), which is highly out a character for one of the premier passers in the league. Another area is a Chargers’ defense that has suddenly become fairly easy to run on and score against; giving-up an average of 121.7 yards on the ground and 22.7 points a game.
Kansas City had a disastrous start to the season with three-straight losses in which it was outscored 109- 27. It has gotten a hold of the reins and is right back in the thick of things in the division race with three straight wins. The Chiefs are 3-3 SU ( 4-2 ATS) and the total has gone 3-3 in their six games.
One of the reasons for the quick turnaround is a better performance from quarterback Matt Cassel, who has only been picked-off twice in the last three games after throwing five interceptions in the first three games. The offense, as a whole, as played much better since deciding to take the entire month of September off.
The Chargers are 2-5-1 ATS in their last eight games overall and the total has gone ‘over’ in five of their last seven games against the AFC.
The Chiefs are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following an ATS win and the total has stayed ‘under’ in their last five games against the AFC West.
Head-to-head in this series, San Diego is just 4-9 ATS in its last 13 trips to Kansas City and the total has stayed ‘under’ in three of the last five meetings overall.
The Chiefs remain a very difficult team to beat at home no matter what the circumstances, but with the changing tide of both these teams, stick with Kansas City to not only cover on Monday night, but to get the outright win.
