The Pittsburgh Steelers resume their march towards the postseason this upcoming Sunday night when they travel to Arrowhead Stadium to take-on the Kansas City Chiefs in this AFC conference matchup. Kick-off is slated for 8:20 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast nationally on NBC.
Pittsburgh got stuck with the final bye week of the season but the timing may have been perfect after a tough 23-20 loss to Baltimore three weeks ago as a 3.5-point home favorite followed by a 24-17 victory over Cincinnati as a 3.5-point road favorite on Nov. 13. The Steelers are now 7-3 straight-up on the season and 5-5 against the spread. They are 2-3 both SU and ATS on the road this season and the total has gone ‘over’ in six of their games.
The extra rest especially helped a banged-up Ben Rothlisberger try and heal-up a bit for the season’s stretch run. Pittsburgh also hopes to get linebacker LaMarr Woodley back for this one after he missed the last two games with a strained hamstring.
Kansas City’s up and down season could be ready to hit rock-bottom after first losing quarterback Matt Cassel for the season and then losing to New England 34-3 this past Monday night as a 17-point road underdog. It is now 4-6 SU (5-5 ATS) on the year and two games in back of Oakland in the crowded AFC West. The total has stayed ‘under’ in seven of its first 10 games.
Tyler Palko got the start in Cassel’s place and struggled all night long against a Patriots’ defense that came into the game ranked last against the pass and last in total yards allowed. The prospect of a turnaround against a Steelers’ defense that is ranked third against the pass and second overall does not look good.
Pittsburgh is 8-3 ATS against teams with losing records overall. The total has gone ‘over’ in six of its last seven road games and in 10 of its last 14 games overall.
Kansas City is 5-11 ATS in its last 16 games against the AFC and 2-5 ATS in its last seven home games. The total has stayed ‘under’ in its last five conference games. It has also stayed ‘under’ in its last four games at home.
Head-to-head in this series, the home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings, but evenly split at 3-3 ATS in the last six games overall. The total has gone ‘over’ in the last four games in Kansas City and in the last five meetings overall.
The Steelers are coming off a bye and ready to take full advantage of the Chiefs recent misfortunes with a win on the road that easily covers the spread.
