Can NFL underdogs cover again in Week 3?

All day long, the dogs bit.

They drew blood in Chicago and New Jersey and Green Bay where the underdogs beat heavily backed favorites (Pittsburgh, New England and the Packers). In all, seven underdogs not only covered the spread but won outright!

In Week 3, there are six home underdogs - a favorite football betting situation for many handicappers. But consider the quality of those home dogs before backing them - the Rams, Lions, Bucs, Bills, Seahawks and Bengals.

There are reasons they are not favored, reasons those who bet on sports must consider every week. Many are loser franchises - loser teams find ways to lose. Aside from the Bills and Seahawks (and what we consider a flukey performance by the Bungles at Lambeau), those are bad teams.

More interesting for NFL underdog bettors is the fact the Ravens are 2-TD home chalk to Cleveland. Are the Browns really that bad? Are the Ravens primed for a letdown after their dramatic and much-hyped last-second win in San Diego in Week 2?

Also, the Colts - fresh off a disappointing performance where they had less than 15 minutes time of possession but still beat Miami - are on the road again and an underdog at Arizona. More money has actually come in on Cardinals during the week - is that square money following Arizona's NFC title defense or smart money questioning Indy (2-0 despite a pair of lame performances)?

The Giants have been road warriors the past two seasons and won outright as a dog again in Week 2, beating Dallas. They stay on the road, playing Tampa Bay as a 6.5-point favorite. Of note, all six meetings between these teams since 1997 have played UNDER the total so many over under bettors can find some value here in TB. However, the Bucs have been awful so far and both 2009 games went way OVER.

There is a sense brewing in the NFL betting community that the Saints could be the type of juggernaut that the Patriots were in 2007, when they romped and covered huge double-digit spreads. They lay 6.5 points on the road at Buffalo. Both teams are 2-0 ATS and won have played a pair of OVERs so far in 2009.

Underdog bettors should be wary of Cincinnati. They face an angry Pitt team that lost at Chicago last week and which has covered five in a row against the Bengals.
