Key NFL Injuries - Week 2

Injury reports are not always a view into the soul of the point spread and they don't always have the impact you would expect on the line (or the game itself).

Square bettors see the starting LB injured and immediately throw their money on the OVER or the other side of the game, without even knowing that the team's depth chart might have someone just as good. Or maybe he is a better cover man and that's actually better against a pass-happy offense this week.

With all that said, the NFL injury report is must-read material each week, right up until game time. Injuries affect public sentiment and line moves so you can profit from knowing your stuff.

In New England this week, the Patriots will be missing arguably their top defensive player with a knee injury. Jerod Mayo LB was hurt early in the Monday night tilt against the Bills and may have been one of the key factors in Buffalo's ability to chalk up 4.7 yards per rush.

The Patriots may have their hands full with the Jets vaunted running attack in Week 2. Rookie Mark Sanchez relied on his backfield and then was excellent on third-down passes in the rout of Houston. Astute bettors appear have to picked up on this and have bet the game down to Patriots -3.5 after opening the number at -5.5. However there are still a few sportsbooks hanging a 4 on this game (like Bodog which often has the best NFL underdog lines).

In Philly, QB Donovan McNabb is doubtful this week with a rib injury although head coach Andy Reid hasn't ruled him out. If he isn't ready to go, Philly will go with rarely used Kevin Kolb, who was semi effective in garbage time of the Week 1 rout of Carolina.

The linemakers feel that McNabb won't be under center this week and have made the Eagles a modest 1-point home favorite. Don't be surprised that if/when McNabb's status is finalized that the line on this game moves to NO -3.

In Chicago, the Steelers and Bears each lost their defensive leaders in Week 1. The Bears will be without Pro Bowl MLB Brian Urlacher for the season with a dislocated wrist while the Steelers will be without their sparkplug safety Troy Polamalu for 3 -6 weeks with a knee injury.

Pittsburgh may also be without starting OLB Pisa Tinoisamoa. The line setters don't seem to have factored this into the betting line this week setting what appears to be a low total of 37.5. It's worth watching the odds on this one.
