It will be a showdown between a prolific offense and a shutdown defense when the New Orleans Saints clash with the San Francisco 49ers this Saturday afternoon at Candlestick Park in the Divisional Round of this year’s NFL playoffs. The kick-off for this one is slated for 4:30 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on FOX.

New Orleans left little doubt of its ability to put points on the board in a 45-28 demolition of Detroit as a 10.5-point home favorite in Saturday’s Wildcard Round playoff game. The lopsided victory also extended the Saints current winning streak to nine games both straight-up and against the spread. They are now 14-3 SU overall and 13-4 ATS. The total went way ‘over ‘ the 59.5-point line against the Lions and has now gone ‘over’ in 10 of 17 games this year.

The Saints will have to take their aerial show on the road this week where they are 5-3 SU and 4-4 ATS this season. Weather should not be a factor for Saturday’s game, but New Orleans will not have the luxury of a fast track that a dome provides for an offense that is ranked first in the NFL in both passing and total yards a game and second in scoring with an average of 34.2 points a game.

A well-rested San Francisco team will now have to prove that its 13-3 SU record overall and 7-1 SU record at home this season was not a fluke. The 49ers have also been a very profitable team to wager on with a 12-3-1 record overall ATS and an even more impressive 7-0-1 record ATS at home. The total has gone 7-9 in their 16 games this year.

Defense will be the name of the game for San Francisco if it is going to have any shot at pulling-off an upset. It comes into this game with the fourth-ranked unit in the league in total yards allowed and the second-ranked unit in points allowed; giving-up an average of just 14.3 points a game. The one area of concern is the fact it was ranked 16th against the pass.

The Saints are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games overall, but just 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games played in January. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of their last seven games on grass.

The 49ers are 13-3-1 ATS in their last 17 games overall, but are 1-4-1 ATS in their last six playoff games. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of their last seven games on grass.

Head-to-head, New Orleans is 10-3 ATS in the last 13 meetings and 5-1 ATS in their last five trips to Candlestick. The total has gone ‘over’ in the last seven meetings in San Francisco.

Point Spread Pick

The 49ers will put up a much tougher battle than Detroit did, but in the end Drew Brees and the Saints’ offense will be just too much for the defense to handle as the 49ers’ offense will struggle to play from behind all day long.
