Last year was an incredible one for passers, as a whopping 10 quarterbacks threw for 4000 yards or more. Can the feat be duplicated again? And who will finish atop the list? Let's analyze 2010 NFL futures and who might have the most passing yards this year.
Indianapolis
Manning heads up this list after finishing second in yardage a year ago. He's surpassed 4000 yards passing in 10 of his 12 NFL seasons and, barring injury, the trend will continue in 2010. Manning has a brilliant corps of receivers to choose from-Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, Austin Collie, Pierre Garcon and Anthony Gonzalez-and is the safe bet to finish atop the passing chart.
DREW BREES, +550 New Orleans
Last season was tremendous for passers, as Brees tossed for 4388 yards and only finished sixth. That's his lowest total as a Saint as the team leaned on the running game more often; that trend should continue this season, and Brees' stats should hold around 4400 yards.
AARON RODGERS, +675 Green Bay
Rodgers has now enjoyed back-to-back seasons of 4000-plus yards-an amazing feat since they were his first two seasons as a starter. He has more weapons than ever to work with, but a leaky offensive line and a propensity to hold onto the ball (though both improved in the second half last year) could result in lots of sacks and potentially injury. Rodgers is a good candidate to miss a game or two, denting his overall total.
MATT SCHAUB, +700 Houston
At first glance, getting the defending yardage champion at +700 seems like a coup. Bear in mind, though, Schaub missed nine games in 2007 and 2008; last season was the first he managed to stay on the field all year. Most of the injuries were fluky, coming off of late hits and the like, but it's a concern. If you think Schaub can last 16 games, he's your man.
TOM BRADY, +700 New England
Brady wasn't himself last year but still managed 4398 yards-the second highest total of his career. Now two years removed from knee surgery, Brady should see his accuracy on deep balls return. His receiving corps is shaky, but the ground game is even worse; Brady will have to air it out this season. He's a good value pick here.
OTHER NOTABLES
Brett Favre, +1400. Stay away. Even if Favre returns, he's nursing a bad ankle. Minnesota will ease the pressure by sticking to a heavy does of the run. His yardage will decline.
Tony Romo, +1400. A great value pick at +1400. Romo finished third with 4483 last year and his receiving corps is even deeper. He'll have to compete with a trio of running backs for plays, but Romo is a steal here.
Jay Cutler, +2200. Cutler threw for 4526 yards in his final season in Denver. Similar numbers could be on the horizon with Mike Martz taking over the offense. The Bears offense is going to grip it and rip it.
Donovan McNabb, +4000. The guy who helped Cutler to all those yards two years ago? Mike Shanahan. Now Shanny joins Donovan McNabb in Washington. This is a real long-shot-McNabb has never been healthy enough to surpass 4000 yards in his career-but it might be worth dropping a few bucks on if you're feeling lucky.
