Monday will mark Moss' second debut with Minnesota (1-2, 2-1 ATS), where he began his pro career. The rangy receiver had caught just nine passes in New England this season, and the Vikings were desperate to replace injured receiver Sidney Rice. Without Rice, the Vikings offense is averaging just 14 points per game, down from 29 a year ago. Brett Favre has looked all but washed up, though many believe he simply didn't have faith in his targets. With Moss in the fold-a player Favre has publicly wished to play with for years-you should at least see Minnesota take more shots down the field.
The Vikings have been as good as ever on defense, allowing a paltry 12 points per game. They've been vicious against both the run (87 yards per game) and pass (189 yards per game). The effort against the pass is particularly impressive considering the Vikes have yet to get their formidable rush going. Minnesota has just four sacks through three games, but that can't be expected to last for long. Jared Allen has racked up 14.5 sacks in each of his first two years as a Viking; with just one so far, he's due for an explosion.
So far, Minnesota has relied on a healthy does of Adrian Peterson to run the ball. That probably won't work this week, as the Jets field the fourth best run "D" in the NFL. They're allowing 74 yards per outing at a very impressive 3.2 yards per pop. The secondary should get a boost with the expected return of Darrelle Revis, who was nursing a hamstring injury. The Jets are allowing 233 pass yards per game-22nd in the league-so he'll be a welcome addition.
The biggest surprise in New York has been the play of Mark Sanchez. The defense and running game are good enough that Sanchez doesn't have to be a world beater; he just needs to play sharp and avoid mistakes. He's done that and then some, tossing eight touchdowns without a single turnover. Sanchez is only completing 58 percent of his passes, though, so it'd be nice to see that number come up a bit. Of course, the Jets can't complain about his play at all right now. Besides, they'll still mostly rely on the two-headed monster of LaDainian Tomlinson and Shonn Greene, who have powered New York to the NFL's second-rated running game.
New York and Minnesota haven't met since 2006, when the Jets won and covered 26-13. Minnesota has gone under the total in all three of its games this year; New York is over in three of its four. BetED.com has set the total for Monday's match up at 39 points.
