The Kansas City Chiefs will look to close the gap with the Oakland Raiders in the AFC West with a victory over their division rivals at Oakland Coliseum this upcoming Sunday afternoon. Kick-off is set for 4:05 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast nationally on CBS.
Kansas City is hoping that a week off after netting its second-straight win of the season the week before with a 28-24 victory over Indianapolis as a one-point road underdog is enough time to erase the memory of a 0-3 start in which it was outscored 109-27. The Chiefs are now 2-3 straight-up (3-2 against the spread) and the total has gone ‘over’ in three of their five games.
The Chiefs’ turnaround over the past few weeks can be attributed to an offense that finally found a way to get into the end zone. Matt Cassel threw just one touchdown pass in the first two weeks of the season, but has now tossed seven in his last three games. Kansas City’s running game took a major hit with the loss of Jamaal Charles for the season, but Dexter McCluster and Thomas Jones have done a decent job filling the void over the past two games.
Oakland surprising start has it just a half-game behind San Diego in the division at 4-2 SU (4-1-1 ATS). It is coming off a 24-17 victory over Cleveland as a seven-point home favorite this past Sunday after rallying for a 25-20 win over Houston the week before as a 4.5-point road underdog. The total has been evenly split at 3-3 in the first six games.
Sunday’s win over the Browns came at a steep price after quarterback Jason Campbell went down with a broken collarbone that should keep him out of the lineup for at least six weeks. Kyle Boller will take over the reins in his absence so the drop-off should not be too dramatic, but the Raiders are extremely thin at the QB position after that. Look for them to rely heavily on a rushing attack that is churning-out an average of 160 yards a game behind Darren McFadden and Michael Bush.
Kansas City is 2-5 SU in its last seven games overall and 3-7 SU in its last 10 games on the road. The total has gone ‘over’ in six of its last nine road games.
Oakland is 5-2 SU in its last seven games and 6-3 SU in its last nine home games. The total has gone ‘over’ in five of its last seven games at home.
Head-to-head in this series, the Chiefs are just 2-5 SU in the last seven meetings overall, but 7-1 SU in their last eight trips to Oakland. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of the last six meetings.
Kansas City has a great chance to win this game outright as Oakland adjusts to Boller leading the way, but at the very least it covers with the 3.5 points. Note: After we published this article the Raiders acquired Carson Palmer from the Bengals. We do not think that he will start, so 1'm going to stick with the against spread pick on the Chiefs.
