Michael Vick and the Eagles (7-4, 5-6 ATS) have been touted as having one of the league's most explosive offenses but, over the past two weeks, opponents are beginning to find ways to slow the attack.
The Giants and Bears have each kept Philly's offense mostly in check over the last two games-and against Chicago, it was enough to cost the Eagles the game, as they lost 31-26. It snapped a three-game winning streak and dropped Philadelphia to 2-3 ATS in its last five games. Obviously, 26 points isn't a bad output, but Philly trailed 13-0 heading into the fourth quarter. Vick was intercepted for the first time all season, and home run hitter DeSean Jackson was so invisible, coach Andy Reid tore him apart in from of his teammates after the game.
Of course, the defense deserves a healthy share of the blame. They allowed Jay Cutler to fire four touchdown passes. The Eagles are tied for fourth-worst in the NFL with 22 touchdown passes allowed, and they have to do a better job stopping big plays. While Philly is respectable in pass yards allowed this season, the club is among the NFL's bottom third in pass plays of 20-plus and 40-plus yards allowed
Houston (5-6, 4-6-1 ATS) snapped a four-game losing streak with Sunday's 20-0 victory over Tennessee. The Texans covered as five-point favorites, giving them back-to-back wins against the spread.
The defense is a train wreck. It surrendered at least 29 points in every game of the losing streak, and last week's shutout probably feels like a dream for Texans fans. Of course, the Titans were possibly the best team Houston could have faced-they were starting a third-string rookie at quarterback. The Texans have been ravaged by the pass in 2010, ranking dead last at 286 yards allowed per game. With Smith at the helm, Houston allowed just 138 pass yards.
Adrian Foster carried the offense against Tennessee, as he's done all season. The explosive running back racked up 143 yards on the ground while adding nine catches for 75 yards. It helped cover up a pretty quiet game for Matt Schaub, who threw two touchdowns but managed just 178 yards on 35 attempts. Despite getting ejected after a brawl with Titans cornerback Courtland Finnegan, the Texans will have the services of Andre Johnson, who was only slapped with a fine.
Philadelphia and Houston have met just twice in NFL history. Philly won both (1-1 ATS), though they haven't played since 2006. Houston has gone over the total in three of its last four games; Philadelphia has gone over the total in six of its past seven games. BetEd has set the total for Sunday's match up at 51 points.
