Raine Man: NFL Week 3 Picks

Perhaps if I rub two sticks together, start a fire, and pray to the football gods, they will deliver me a winning pick.

Two weeks into the NFL season, and I've gone 1-3 each time. Last week's national nightmare included Oakland winning a football game, Miami's Wildcat offense coming back to life and pounding the over, and Tony Romo giving the ball repeatedly to the Giants. Only the Vikings paid off for us. At least we've found a way to enjoy Brett Favre wearing purple. Yeesh.

The more games they play, the more accurate our picks will be here at Raine Labs, where the future is being predicted today. Let's continue to kick the Lions while they're down for starters.

Washington (-6) at Detroit

In the matchup between the Washington defense (30 points allowed) and the Detroit offense (40 points scored), the clear winner is Washington. I'm not saying Matthew Stafford isn't smart, but he's not NFL quarterback smart, at least not enough to pick up this offense yet. I've yet to be impressed by Jason Campbell, either, but the Lions aren't good enough at defense to take advantage. I think the Washington Generals could beat Detroit by a touchdown.

Tennessee at N.Y. Jets (-2.5)

Is it too late to jump on the Gang Green bandwagon? I've been looking at fading the Titans as much as possible, and this looks like a good opportunity - even if the Jets are starting to get some fan support behind poster-boy QB Mark Sanchez. But it's New York with the better defense in this matchup under new head coach Rex Ryan.

Denver (-1) at Oakland

No way the Raiders go 3-0 ATS. Everything I said about Matthew Stafford goes double for JaMarcus Russell - and it's sad that Daunte Culpepper ended up carrying a clipboard for both these guys. The Broncos have undervalued QB Kyle Orton continuing to win football games, and the Raiders can't stop Denver's perennially strong running attack.

Atlanta (+4) at New England

Have they jumped the shark? The Patriots are 0-2 ATS and somewhat fortunate not to be 0-2 SU. Tom Brady isn't comfortable, the defense is substandard, and even the special teams are lousy. Atlanta is 2-0 SU and ATS, and I expect DE John Abraham to put the same hurt on Brady that he did to Chad Pennington (two sacks) in Week 1. How great does Matt Ryan look with tight end Tony Gonzalez on the field? Great enough to win this game straight up.
