The Cleveland Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers square-off this Thursday night at Heinz Field in the first of two meetings this season between these two AFC North Division rivals. The kick-off is set for 8:20 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast nationally on the NFL Network.
Cleveland comes into this game fresh off a 24-10 beatdown at the hands of another division rival, the Baltimore Ravens. The Browns closed as seven-point home underdogs and the total stayed ‘under’ the 38.5-point line. They are now 4-8 straight-up on the year and 3-7-2 against the spread. The total has stayed ‘under’ in seven of their 12 games this season.
The Ravens took an old-fashioned approach to beating Cleveland this past Sunday, by running the ball right down its throat for close to 300 yards of rushing offense. The Browns’ offensive attack remained non-existent and is now ranked 30th in the league in total yards and 28th in scoring with an average of just 14.6 points a game.
Pittsburgh took another step closer to locking-up a spot in the postseason with a 35-7 romp over Cincinnati as a seven-point home favorite. The total stayed ‘under’ the 43.5-point line and is now 6-6 on the year. The win moved its record to 9-3 SU (6-6 ATS) and kept it tie with Baltimore atop the division. The Steelers are now 5-1 SU at home this season and 4-2 ATS.
This team continues to grind-out wins each week behind an offense that is ranked 11th in total yards per game and a defense that is ranked first in total yards allowed. Ben Roethlisberger is certainly not the flashiest quarterback in the league, but he is completing over 63 percent of his passes and has thrown 19 touchdowns verse 10 interceptions so far. Rashard Mendenhall leads the Steelers in rushing with 634 yards on 169 carries to balance out the offensive attack.
The Browns are 2-6-1 ATS in their last nine games overall and 1-3 ATS in their last four games on the road. The total has stayed ‘under’ in six of their last eight games.
The Steelers are 4-2 ATS in their last six games overall and 2-2 ATS in their last four home games. The total has gone ‘over’ in three of their last five games overall, but has stayed ‘under’ the last two weeks.
Head-to-head, Pittsburgh has won nine of the last 10 games SU, but the series is tied at 5-5 ATS. Cleveland failed to cover in both games last season including a 28-10 loss as a 14-point underdog in its last trip to Heinz Field.
These teams are clearly headed in the opposite direction and with the Steelers needing every win it can get to keep pace with the Ravens, count on them to easily cover the 11 points at home.
