The Chicago Bears will look to move to 2-0 when they tangle with the New Orleans Saints this upcoming Sunday afternoon at the Superdome. The game is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast regionally on FOX.
Chicago opened the regular season as a three-point home underdog to Atlanta, but was able to dispose of the Falcons in a convincing fashion with a 30-12 victory that went ‘over' the 40.5-point line. The Bears built a 16-3 lead at the half and linebacker Brian Urlacher put things away for good in the third quarter with a 12-yard fumble return for a score.
The big story in this game was the play of Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler, who was last seen standing on the sidelines in the Bears playoff loss to Green Bay. He completed 22-of-32 attempts for 312 yards and two touchdowns including a 56-yard catch and run by running back Matt Forte in the first quarter. Forte added 68 more yards on the ground as Chicago took control of this game early on its way to an easier than expected win.
New Orleans had the honor of opening the 2011 season against the defending Super Bowl Champions last Thursday night. In what turned out to be a highly entertaining shootout, the Saints came up short with a 42-34 loss as a 4.5-point road underdog. The total went way ‘over' the 47.5-point line.
The game went down to the final play as a defensive pass interference call ,as time ran out, gave New Orleans the ball at the Green Bay one-yard line. Rookie running back Mark Ingram was stopped dead in his tracks on a run up the middle with no time left on the clock to preserve the win for the Packers.
While you may question the call on that final play, there is no question that the Saints' passing offense picked up from where it left off last season. Drew Brees put the ball up 49 times and completed 32 passes for 419 yards and three TD's. Wide receivers' Devery Henderson and Marques Colston combined for 12 receptions for 181 yards and running back Darren Sproules added seven catches for 75 yards. New Orleans still had problems running the ball with just 81 yards on the ground.
Chicago is now 9-3 straight-up in its last 12 games overall and 5-1 SU in its last six games on the road (4-1-1 against the spread). The total has gone ‘over' in seven of its last nine games.
New Orleans is 1-4 ATS in its last five games overall and 3-6 ATS in its last nine games at home. The total has stayed ‘under' in four of its last six games at the Superdome.
Head-to-head, the Bears are 2-3-2 ATS in the last seven games overall and 1-3-1 ATS in their last five trips to New Orleans. The total has gone ‘over' in four of the last five meetings here.
Point Spread Pick
There is little doubt that playing the Saints on the road is a tough task for any team. However, seven points is a generous spread for a Chicago team that looks ready to once again compete with Green Bay for the NFC North title.
