The No.2 seed Baltimore Ravens advanced through the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs to earn a trip to Gillette Stadium this Sunday to face the No.1 seed New England Patriots in this season’s AFC Championship Game. The kick-off for this clash is set for 3 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast nationally on CBS.
It was not pretty, but Baltimore’s 20-13 victory over Houston on Sunday as a 7.5-point home favorite has it just one victory away from returning to its first Super Bowl since winning it all in 2000. The Ravens are now 13-4 straight-up on the season, but just 8-8-1 overall against the spread and 1-4 ATS in their last five games. The total stayed ‘under’ the 37-point line and has now stayed ‘under’ in five of their last seven games.
If Baltimore is going to have any shot at pulling-off the upset on Sunday it will once again be behind its defense. Joe Flacco and the offense were completely ineffective against the Texans as early turnovers were the only reason it managed to score 20 points. Flacco finished the day completing just 51.8 percent of his passes for 177 yards and Ray Rice was held to 60 yards rushing on 20 carries.
New England made sure there would be no more miraculous Tim Tebow comebacks in Saturday night’s 45-10 drubbing of Denver in the AFC’s other Divisional Round game. The Patriots easily covered as 14-point home favorites in a game that was basically over by halftime with the Broncos trailing 35-7. New England is now 14-3 SU and 10-7 ATS with the total going ‘over’ in 12 of its 17 games this season. It is 8-1 SU at home and 6-3 ATS.
Tom Brady appeared to be a man on a mission in this game with 363 yards passing while tying an NFL playoff record with six touchdown passes. This dominating performance was complemented by a strong defensive effort that held the Broncos to only 252 yards of total offense including just 108 yards through the air.
The Ravens are 5-11 ATS in their last 16 games played in January and 1-4 ATS in their last five games against the AFC. The total has stayed ‘under’ in seven of their last 10 playoff games.
The Patriots are 1-5 ATS in their last six playoff games at home, but 5-2 ATS in their seven games against the AFC. The total has stayed ‘under’ in 11 of their last 17 playoff games at home.
Head-to-head in this series, the home team is 4-1-1 ATS in the last six meetings and Baltimore is 1-3-2 ATS in its last six trips to Foxborough. The total has gone ‘over’ in three of the last four games.
The Ravens stunned the Patriots 33-14 in the 2010 playoffs as 3.5-point road underdogs, but do not expect the same result this time around. Brady’s mission for a third world title continues with another stellar performance that propels his to team to a victory that covers the 7.5 points.
