American Football Conference Odds
The Colts (5/1) now have the best odds to win the 2009 AFC Championship. Even though they lost their first game to the Bears they came back and won in week 2 against the Vikings. Peyton Manning is now healthy and their offense is starting click. The main question mark is their D, which is ranked 9th in the AFC, being pretty weak against both the pass and the run. However, if their offense can perform it may not really matter, as their D will improve and their offense will put up a lot of points.
The Steelers (5.5/1) have looked good in the beginning of the season and their D is ranked 3rd in the AFC and is especially tough against the run. The Steelers recently got good news as QB Ben Roethlisberger, who is the top ranked QB in the NFL, only has a sprained shoulder and not a dislocated one and he will not miss any time. RB Willie Parker has the 3rd most yards in the league and is all the way back from a broken leg he suffered at the end of last year. Things are looking good for the Steelers, who may be a smart pick to win the AFC.
The Broncos, Patriots, and Chargers all have 6/1 odds to win the AFC this season.
The Broncos offense on fire, as Jay Cutler is playing great and is the 4th ranked QB in the league. However, the Broncos need to play better D, as they rank 3rd to last in the AFC. If their D improves the Broncos can make a series run to win the AFC.
All is not lost in New England even though Tom Brady is out for the year. Matt Cassel has played steady since Brady went out. The Pats D has stepped up, as they rank 6th in the AFC. Their schedule is pretty friendly for them over the next few weeks, as they play Miami, have a bye, and then play San Francisco. Don't count the Pats out, as they still are a solid team and have a guy named Moss.
The Chargers are 6/1 odds to win the AFC even though they are 0-2. Their D ranks dead last in the AFC, but there is hope with their 2nd ranked offense. Their schedule should help them out, as 2 of the next 3 games they play Oakland and Miami. If their D gets back on track they can do what they did last year, which was have a horrible start only to turn it around and win the AFC West and almost win the AFC.
The surprise team in the AFC this season has been the Buffalo Bills. The big reason for their turnaround? Their defense, as last year they ranked dead last on D in the AFC and this year they rank 4th. 2nd year starting QB Trent Edwards has been solid and their early season schedule is very favorable. In the next few weeks the Bills play Oakland, St. Louis, Arizona, and then have a bye. They do not have to play the Patriots until week 10, which will be a good test to see how good the Bills really are.
Jacksonville also has 13/1 odds, but they are 0-2, which is not a good start since they play in the toughest division in the AFC in the AFC South. It is early in the season and there is time to right the ship, but they need to start winning. Their upcoming schedule is not easy as in their next 4 games they play Indianapolis, Houston, Denver, and Pittsburg before they have a bye. It will not be easy, but the Jags have the D and the QB, David Garrard, to turn things around and challenge for the AFC Title
