Here's our rundown on what has happened in the offseason for all of the AFC East teams and their odds to win the AFC East as listed at bodog
The Bills offseason has been all about the ‘D’. They signed Barnett to replace Posluszny but that is a downgrade. Rookies Dareus and Sheppard are expected to step into the starting lineup and give the front seven some life and young legs. Williams should at least win the nickel corner spot and could start. Buffalo ranked 32nd in run defense in ’10 but have made some smart additions. The offense was neglected but Smith is adept at gadget plays and is a force on special teams. Buffalo ranked 25th in offense last year and it’s hard to see how they got much better.
Miami has lots of questions on offense and not acquiring a QB to challenge the beleaguered QB Chad Henne was indeed surprising. They needed to get younger at RB and look for Thomas to start over the flashier Bush. Henne hasn’t had an outlet receiver like Bush and he has the ability to break big plays but can he stay healthy? Pouncey becomes an immediate starter and should help strengthen a weak interior O-line. Burnett replaces Crowder and will team with ILB Karlos Dansby to give the defense two very good players. The defense ranked 6th last season and should play well enough for this team to win, with some help from the offense of course.
The Patriots lacked pass rushers last season and have added three former 1st-round picks to the D-line to try and find a producer. Ochocinco isn’t a burner and look for QB Tom Brady to employ the dink-and-dunk routine on offense. Ochocinco can get open but isn’t the deep threat this team lacks. New England drafted several players who figure more down the road but rookie RBs Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley could contribute. Rookie CB Ras-I Dowling will certainly help on special teams but look for him to get some time on the outside as well. Still a Super Bowl contender but didn’t address major needs.
New York made as much headlines for the players they didn’t get in FA as for the ones they did get. It’s hard to say they improved on offense but QB Mark Sanchez should be better in his third year. Re-signing WR Santonio Holmes was the key move on offense. The defense lost some beef up front and rookie Wilkerson will be expected to contribute right away. He was productive for Temple last year but this is a major step up. The defense didn’t add a bona fide pass rusher, something they sorely needed. Not a great offseason for a team with Super Bowl dreams.
