The West Virginia Mountaineers’ Big East title hopes and BCS bowl berth hangs in the balance this Thursday night when they face the South Florida Bulls in Tampa Bay in the regular season finale for both teams. Game time is set for 8 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
West Virginia needed to rally from a 10-point deficit to pull-out a 21-20 win over Pittsburgh in Friday’s Backyard Brawl as a seven-point home favorite to just to put itself into position to win the conference. It is now 8-3 straight-up (5-6 against the spread) overall and 4-2 SU in the Big East. The total stayed ‘under’ the 58.5-point line against the Panthers, but it had gone ‘over’ in eight of its previous 10 games.
The Mountaineers come into this game with the sixth-ranked passing offense in the nation led by Geno Smith. He has thrown for 3,741 yards and 25 touchdowns while completing 65 percent of his passes. Stedman Bailey and Tavon Austin have combined for 142 receptions for 2,126 yards and 15 TD’s.
South Florida’s 34-24 loss to Louisville last Friday as a 5.5-point home favorite was its sixth in the last seven games after a 4-0 start. At 5-6 SU (4-7 ATS) it would need a win on Thursday just to be considered for a postseason bowl game. The total has gone 6-5 in its 11 games this season.
Offensively, the Bulls have shown excellent balance between the pass and the run as each have been effective at times this year. The problem has been their inability to convert this production to points. They are currently ranked 52nd in the country in scoring with an average of 29.5 points a game, but have scored an average of just 17.5 points in their six losses.
West Virginia is 5-1 ATS in its last six games on the road and 4-0 ATS in its last four games following an ATS loss. The total has gone ‘over’ in six of its last eight conference games.
South Florida is 0-4 ATS in its last four home games and 1-7 ATS in its last eight games against the Big East. The total has gone ‘over’ in four of its last five games at home.
Head-to-head in this series, the Mountaineers have gone 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings and the total has stayed ‘under’ in five of the last six games. The last time these two met in Tampa was in 2009 with the Bulls coming away with a 30-19 victory as 2.5-point home underdogs. Last season, the Mountaineers won 20-6 at home as 10-point favorites.
. For the most part, South Florida has been competitive this season, but has had trouble closing games out. Look for the same this Thursday night as West Virginia outlasts the Bulls to come away with the win.
