East meets West when the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, out of the ACC square-off against the Utah Utes from the PAC-12 on New Year’s Eve at the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas. Game time for this coastal conference clash is scheduled for 2 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on CBS.
Georgia Tech streaked-out to a 6-0 start this season and climbed all the way to 12th in the rankings, but things all came unraveled with four losses in its last six games to finish the season 8-4 straight-up and just 5-6-1 against the spread. The total went ‘over’ in seven of its 12 games this year.
The Yellow Jackets had the third-ranked rushing offense in the country with an average of 316.8 yards a game, but one of the main reasons for the collapse down the stretch was an inconsistent offense that averaged 34.9 points on the year but just 23.2 in its last six games. Their defense also struggled; giving-up over 30 points in each of the final three games of the season.
Utah’s debut in the PAC-12 this season was rocky at best with an overall record of 7-5 SU (5-7 ATS), but a 4-5 SU record in conference play. The Utes biggest win of the season was a 34-21 victory over Arizona as four-point road underdogs, but the losses piled-up and they finished a disappointing fourth in the South Division.
Defense was not an issue for Utah as it finished ranked 19th in the nation in points allowed; giving-up an average of 19.7 points a game. The problem was an offense that ranked 78th in the country in scoring with an average of 24.6 points a game. James White IV led a potent rushing attack with 1,404 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns, but the Utes’ passing attack was almost nonexistent with just over 2000 total yards through the air.
Georgia Tech is 1-6-1 ATS in its last eight games overall and 0-4 ATS in its last four bowl games as a favorite. The total has gone ‘over’ in five of its last seven bowl games as a favorite.
Utah is 7-2 ATS in its last nine bowl games and 11-5-1 ATS in its last 17 non-conference games. The total has stayed ‘under’ in 10 of its last 14 games overall.
Neither team has been playing to form as of late, but stick with the Yellow Jackets to come away with a victory that covers the three points as they have a running game that can still control the line of scrimmage and move the chains.
