The Big Ten Champion Wisconsin Badgers tangle with the PAC-12 Champion Oregon Ducks on Monday, Jan.2 in this season’s Rose Bowl from Pasadena. This classic clash is slated to get underway at 5 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
Wisconsin punched its ticket to this game by avenging an earlier season loss to Michigan State with a 42-39 victory over the Spartans as a 9.5-point favorite in the first ever Big Ten title game. The Badgers finished the regular season at 11-2 straight-up and was 7-5-1 against the spread. The total went ‘over’ in nine of their 13 games this year.
Much of this team’s success this season can be attributed to an offense that was ranked 10th in the nation in rushing behind Montee Ball’s 1,759 total yards and 6.4 yards-per-carry average. He also led the team in scoring with an incredible 32 rushing touchdowns and added six more scores catching the ball. The Badgers’ defense complimented their high-scoring offense by holding opponents to an average of just 17 points a game.
Oregon was no stranger to the end zone either with an average of 46.2 points a game, which was third-highest in the country. They were also powered by a high-octane rushing attack that averaged 295.7 yards a game. LaMichael James did most of the damage with 1,646 yards on the ground, but Kenjon Barner chipped-in an additional 909 yards on 145 carries. The Ducks’ defense was a bit more porous; giving-up an average of 23.6 points a game.
This team claimed its conference title with a 49-31 thrashing of UCLA as a 31-point favorite in the first ever PAC-12 Championship Game. The victory capped-off a very successful 11-2 SU campaign overall and a sterling 8-1 SU record in conference play. The Ducks were 6-5-2 ATS this season and the total went ‘over’ in nine of their 14 games.
Wisconsin is 5-2 ATS in its last seven bowl games and 4-0 ATS in its last four games as an underdog. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of its last six bowl games as an underdog.
Oregon is 1-4 ATS in its last five games against the Big Ten and 1-3-1 ATS in its last five games as a favorite. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of its last six bowl games.
It is obvious that both teams have been very successful running the ball this season; however the advantage in the passing game goes to Wisconsin and quarterback Russell Wilson, who passed for 2,879 yards and 31 touchdowns this season. When push comes to shove in this matchup, stick with Badgers to come up with one or two more big plays to secure a straight-up win.
