The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs will put their current seven-game winning streak on the line next Wednesday night when they take-on the TCU Horned Frogs in this year’s San Diego County Credit Union’s Poinsettia Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium. This Western Athletic-Mountain West clash of conference champions is slated for an 8 p.m. (ET) start and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
Louisiana Tech ran its current winning streak to seven games by closing-out the regular season with 44-0 shutout of New Mexico State as a 23-point home favorite. The win also raised its record to 8-4 straight-up on the year and a very profitable 10-2 against the spread. The total stayed ‘under’ in seven of its 12 games this season.
This season has been the tale of two teams after a 1-4 SU start, but the Bulldogs have been able to turn things around behind a passing game that has averaged 247.1 yards a game. They may need an even bigger effort through the air, if their leading rusher, Lennon Creer is unable to return from an ankle injury he sustained a few weeks back.
TCU comes into this game at 10-2 SU (6-6 ATS) overall and a perfect 7-0 SU in conference play. The total has gone ‘over’ in nine of its 12 games this year. Despite the record, the Horned Frogs have to feel they took a major step backwards this season after being a BCS-caliber team the past few years. This season, they were never able to get out of the shadow of an early October 40-33 overtime loss to SMU as 13-point home favorites, which is part of the reason they were relegated to a mid-December bowl appearance despite their past resume.
None the less, TCU is still a force to be reckoned with behind a rushing attack that is averaging 210.2 yards a game and an offense that is ranked ninth in the nation in scoring with 41.7 points a game. Combined with a solid defense that has held its opponents to 21.3 points a game, it will be a tall task for Bulldogs to keep this game close for all four quarters.
Louisiana Tech is 5-0 ATS in its last five non-conference games and 6-0 ATS in its last six games as an underdog. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of its last seven games overall.
TCU is 0-6 ATS in its last six games outside the conference and 0-4 ATS in its last four games as a favorite at a neutral site. The total has stayed ‘under’ in seven of its last eight bowl games.
Despite the mismatch on paper, look for the Bulldogs to use the momentum from their seven-game run to give the Horned Frogs all they can handle. In the end, TCU walks away with the win, but the play is on Louisiana Tech to cover with the 10.5 points.
