The Oregon Ducks will look to play the role of spoiler this Saturday night when the try to knock the Stanford Cardinal from the ranks of the unbeaten in this huge PAC-12 North Division clash. Game time from Stanford Stadium is set for 8 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on ABC.
Oregon has rebounded nicely from an opening-day 40-27 loss to No.1 LSU as a three-point favorite with eight-straight victories including a 34-17 rout of Washington this past Saturday as a 16.5-point road favorite. It is now 8-1 straight-up overall (5-3-1 against the spread) and a perfect 6-0 SU in conference play. The total has gone ‘over’ in five of its nine games.
The Ducks’ success this season has been behind an offense that is ranked fifth in the nation in running the ball with an average of 298.4 yards a game. Heisman-hopeful LaMichael James has rushed for 1,061 yards and nine touchdowns, but Kenjon Barner has also been a key part of the ground game with 601 yards and eight TD’s. Oregon is also ranked fifth in scoring, with an average of 46 points a game.
Stanford’s rise to the upper echelon of the BCS rankings has been well documented behind the play of another Heisman Trophy candidate, Andrew Luck. He has thrown for 2,424 yards and 26 TD’s while completing 71.3 percent of his passes. Luck’s numbers have been aided by a trio of receivers that have combined for 91 receptions for 1,341 yards and 12 TD’s. All told, he has completed passes to 17 different players this season.
The result has been a perfect 9-0 start both SU and ATS as the Cardinal’s average margin of victory has been an incredible 31.6 points a game. They are ranked third in the country in scoring with an average of 48.2 points a game and their defense is ranked 11th in points allowed; giving-up an average of 16.6 points a game. The total has actually stayed ‘under’ in five of their nine games.
Oregon is 5-1-1 ATS in its last seven conference games, but just 1-3-2 ATS in its last six games following an ATS win. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of its last seven road games.
Stanford is 21-7-1 ATS in its last 29 games in the PAC-12 and 19-6-1 ATS in its last 26 games following an ATS win. The total has gone ‘over’ in 11 of its last 14 games at home.
Head-to-head in this series, the Ducks are 7-2 ATS in the last nine meetings and the total has gone ‘over’ in the last six.
With a total line set for a basketball game, it is tempting to play the ‘under’, but both these two teams will put some serious points on the board. In the end, the Cardinal scores the most to win and cover at home.
