The North Carolina Tar Heels will try and put a major dent in the Virginia Tech Hokies’ chase for an ACC title when the two meet this Thursday night in Blacksburg in this Coastal Division clash. Game time is set for 8 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
North Carolina’s season has not really been one to remember over the past month or so. It has three losses in its last four games and is now 6-4 straight-up overall (4-6 against the spread) and just 2-4 SU in the ACC. It is coming off a bye heading into this game, but fell to North Carolina State 13-0 its last time out as a 3.5-point road favorite. The total has been evenly split at 5-5 in its 10 games this year.
The Tar Heels’ offense over the past few games has been inconsistent at best. Overall it is ranked 48th in the nation in passing and 60th in scoring with an average of 28.2 points a game. The same could be said for a defense that did hold the Wolfpack to 13 points, but gave up 30 points to Miami and 59 points to Clemson in two previous losses.
Virginia Tech is coming off a huge 37-26 victory over Georgia Tech as a two-point road favorite this past Thursday night. The win pushed the Hokies to an overall record of 9-1 SU and 5-1 SU in conference play. Despite their glimmering record on the field, they have been hard on the wallet this season with a 3-7 record ATS. The total went ‘over’ the 49.5-point line against the Bulldogs but it has stayed ‘under’ in six of their previous nine games.
The Hokies are definitely not one of the flashiest of the teams ranked in the top 10, but they are very efficient at running the ball and keeping opposing teams out of the end zone. Virginia Tech is averaging 206.9 yards a game on the ground behind running back David Wilson. He has already rushed for 1,360 yards and seven touchdowns while averaging 6.5 yards a carry. Its defense is ranked eighth in the country in points allowed; giving-up an average of just 16.5 points a game.
North Carolina is 2-4 ATS in its last six games on the road and the total has been evenly split at 3-3 in its last six road games.
Virginia Tech is 1-5 ATS in its last five home games and the total has stayed ‘under’ in six of its last nine games at home.
Head-to-head, the Tar Heels are just 1-6 SU in the last seven meetings and 2-4 ATS in the last six. The total has stayed ‘under’ in six of the last seven games between the two.
Stick with North Carolina in this one as the half-point hook on the current spread should be just enough for North Carolina to cover on the road.
