The Nebraska Cornhuskers head into Bill Snyder Stadium in Manhattan,KS. this Thursday night for a Big 12-North showdown with the Kansas State Wildcats in a battle of 4-0 teams. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN.
Nebraska was idle this past week after pounding out a 17-3 win over South Dakota State on Sept. 25. The Cornhuskers (4-0) came nowhere near covering the 41 ½ point spread in this game as sloppy play, turnovers, and costly mistakes kept this game much closer than expected. Nebraska built a 14-0 lead at halftime, but could only manage three more points in the second half.
Overall, the Cornhuskers are off to their best start since 2005 and have the fourth ranked rushing offense in the nation. QB Taylor Martinez has led the way with 496 yards on 53 carries and eight TD’s. He has also thrown for 532 yards and two TD’s. He is joined in the backfield by RB’s Roy Helu Jr. and Rex Burkhead, who have combined for over 600 yards rushing and seven TD’s.
Kansas State was also idle last weekend and comes into this game undefeated as well with victories in its first four games. The Wildcats opened their season with a 31-22 win over UCLA as a one-point home favorite and added a 27-20 win over Iowa State as a 3 ½ point favorite in a game played at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. In their last game they grinded out a 17-13 win over UCF as a 6 ½ point home favorite.
The Wildcats have been getting it done on the ground as well as they come into this game with the No. 22 ranked rushing offense in the country. RB Daniel Thomas has done the majority of the damage with 628 yards rushing on 105 carries. He has a 6.0 yards per carry average and leads the team in touchdowns with six. QB Carson Coffman has completed 46-of-76 attempts for 639 yards and five TD’s. His favorite target has been Brodrick Smith, who has 14 receptions for 191 yards and three TD’s.
Nebraska is 9-1 straight-up in its last 10 games but just 5-4-1 against the spread. The Cornhuskers are 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS in their last four road games. The total has gone ‘over’ in three of their last four games.
Kansas State is 7-3 both SU and ATS in its last 10 games. The Wildcats are 4-1 SU in their last five games and 3-2 ATS. In eight previous home games, they are 7-1 SU and 5-3 ATS. The total has stayed ‘under’ in six of their last 10 games.
Head-to-head, Nebraska has won the last five games SU and is 3-2 against the spread. The average margin of victory in those five games has been 20.8 points including a 56-28 win the last time the game was played at Bill Snyder Stadium. The Cornhuskers have dominated this series as of late, but Kansas State has one of its better teams in years and should be able use its running game to keep this game close enough to cover the 12 points at home.
