With college football odds around the corner, it's time to start predicting projected win totals. Here's a look at four teams in interesting spots heading into the 2010 season-and whether they're a good bet to surpass, or fall below, expectations at Sportsbook.com.
IOWA Over 9 wins: -125 Under 9 wins: +105
Iowa has a chance to bust out of the gate with four of its first five games at home. The first road trip will be a challenge, though, as the Hawkeyes draw a tough Arizona squad. Although the Hawkeyes miss out on playing lightweights like Purdue and Illinois, that's counterbalanced by drawing Ohio State, Wisconsin and Penn State at home. November is the month to watch with three road games on tap. Either way, Iowa won 11 games last year and, by getting the heavyweights at home, there's a great chance the Hawkeyes get over nine wins.
FLORIDA Over/under: 10 wins
The Gators are transitioning as Tim Tebow has finally left for the NFL. Replacement John Brantley is a fantastic player, though, and the Gators are losing some points simply because Tebow is gone. Overall, Florida might be the most talented team in the SEC-and that includes Alabama. Generally, the schedule looks pretty forgiving (considering it's the SEC) besides a visit with the Crimson Tide. Don't worry about the "hole" left by Tebow; the Gators are good for more than 10 wins.
USC Over 9.5 wins: -125 Under 9.5 wins: +105
The Trojans have endured a brutal offseason. Head coach Pete Carol is gone-replaced by the unlikable and unpredictable Lane Kiffin-and the program was slammed with NCAA sanctions that prevent the team from competing for the Pac-10 title or a bowl game. True, USC has more talent than anybody in the conference, but it's hard to imagine the players getting up for a season that, ultimately, doesn't count; the under looks pretty appealing.
OKLAHOMA Over 10.5 wins: +115 Under 10.5 wins: -135
Coming off an eight-win season, the Sooners appear to be in a strange place. They're not. Oklahoma is still loaded and will undoubtedly bounce back to its lofty standards in 2010. In fact, head coach Bob Stoops has failed to win double-digit games just twice in his career-and both times he followed it up with a conference championship. Don't expect anything less from the legendary coach; Oklahoma makes a great value pick to win more than 10.5 games.
