The Michigan State Spartans, winners of the Legends Division take-on the Leader Division champion Wisconsin Badgers in the first-ever Big Ten Championship Game this Saturday night at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. This clash is set to get underway at 8:17 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast nationally on FOX.
Michigan State bounced-back from an early season loss to Notre Dame with eight victories in its last nine games and a 7-1 straight-up record in conference play to lock-up the first ever Legends Division title. It went 10-2 SU overall this season and 8-4 against the spread. The total stayed ‘under’ in seven of its 12 games this year.
The key to this successful run for the Spartans has been one of the stingiest defenses in Division IAA. It has given-up a total of 20 points in its past two games and an average of just 15.4 points a game overall, which is sixth-best in the country.
Wisconsin left little doubt as to which team was the best in the Leaders Division with a 45-7 trouncing of Penn State this past Saturday as a 17-point home favorite to tie the Lions at 6-2 SU in Big Ten play. The Badgers are 10-2 SU overall and 7-4-1 ATS. The total has gone ‘over’ in eight of their 12 games this season.
While two bad losses took Wisconsin out of the national title picture, it still comes into this game with some strong credentials on both sides of the ball. The Badgers are ranked 10th in the nation in rushing with 246.7 yards per game led by Monte Ball’s 1,622 yards on the ground and fourth in scoring with an average of 44.8 points a game. Their defense has been even stingier than the Spartans; giving-up an average of just 15.2 points a game. It has held its opponents to 17 points or less in 10 of 12 games this year.
The Spartans are 7-2 ATS in their last nine games in the conference, but 0-4 ATS in their last four neutral-site games. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of their last seven games following an ATS win.
The Badgers are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games in the Big Ten and 6-2 ATS in their last eight games played at a neutral site. The total has gone ‘over’ in 19 of their last 26 games as favorites.
The underdog in this series is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings and the total has gone ‘over’ in eight of the last nine games between the two.
With home-field advantage off the table this time around, stick with the more balanced of the two teams as the Badgers pound their way to a Big Ten title by dominating the games in all three phases.
