The Arizona State Sun Devils, out of the PAC-12 face-off against the Mountain West’s Boise State Broncos next Thursday night in this year’s MAACO Las Vegas Bowl at Sam Boyd Stadium. Game time is set for 8 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
Arizona State secured its sixth win of the season with a 48-14 rout of Colorado as a 32-point home favorite on Oct. 29, but that was its last victory of the season. It crashed and burned down the stretch with four-straight losses to fall to 6-6 straight-up on the year and 3-8-1 against the spread. The total went ‘over’ in 10 of its 12 games this year.
During this slide, the Sun Devil’s defense gave-up an average of 36 points a game after holding opponents to an average of 21.5 points in the previous eight games. The offense was able to keep pace and finished the season averaging 33.9 points, which was ranked 25th in the nation.
Boise State’s bid to play in a BCS bowl game this season ended with a heart-breaking 36-35 loss to conference-rival TCU as a 16-point home favorite on Nov.16. The loss dropped it out of the top five, although it has been able to claw its way back up to No.7 with three straight wins to close-out the season.
The Broncos are 11-1 SU, but just 4-8 ATS. The total has gone ‘over’ in seven of their 12 games this year, but has stayed ‘under’ in its last two. This is another team that knows how to light-up a scoreboard with an average of 43.3 points a game this year. They have also been extremely balanced on offense with a passing game that is averaging 310.3 yards a game and a ground game that is churning-out an average of 172.8 yards a game.
The Sun Devils are 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall and 2-5 ATS in their last seven bowl games. The total has stayed ‘under’ in seven of their last eight games against the MWC.
The Broncos are 5-0 ATS in their last five neutral-site games and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 bowl games. The total has stayed ‘under’ in seven of their last 10 non-conference games.
Every year, Boise State comes into its bowl game with something to prove. Despite having to play in a mid-level bowl because of the loss to TCU, the Broncos love nothing more than the opportunity to kick the stuffing out a mediocre team from a major conference. Stick with them to take full advantage of it in this game.
