It will be the Big Ten verse the Big 12 in this season’s Insight Bowl in Tempe when the Iowa Hawkeyes face-off against the Oklahoma Sooners on Friday, Dec 30 at Sun Devil Stadium. The kick-off for this clash is set for 10 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
Iowa stumbled down the stretch this year with three losses in its last five games including a 20-7 loss to Nebraska as a nine-point road underdog in its last game. It finished with a 7-5 record straight-up and was 5-7 against the spread. The total went ‘over’ in seven of its 12 games this season.
The Hawkeyes feature a balanced offensive attack with 236.3 yards a game passing and 142.8 yards rushing. James Vandenberg threw for 2,806 yards and 23 touchdowns, while Marcus Coker led the way on the ground with 1,384 yards and 15 TD’s. Defensively, Iowa finished the season ranked 42nd in the country in points allowed; giving-up an average of 23.3 points a game.
Oklahoma’s quest for a shot at playing for a national title abruptly came to an end with a 41-38 loss to Texas Tech as a 29-point home favorite on Oct. 22. It proceeded to lose two more times including a 44-10 pasting at the hands on in-state rival Oklahoma State in the season finale as a 3.5-point road underdog. The Sooners finished the year 9-3 SU overall and 6-6 ATS. The total went an even 6-6 in their 12 games.
Injuries took their toll on Oklahoma with the loss of wide receiver Ryan Broyles and running back Dominique Whaley for the season, but it still managed to finish the year ranked 10th in the nation in scoring with an average of 40.3 points a game. Landry Jones led the fourth-ranked passing offense in the country with 4,302 yards and 28 touchdowns. For the most part the Sooners’ defense was solid all season long, but it did surrender a total of 130 points in the team’s three losses.
The Hawkeyes are 5-0 ATS in their last five neutral-site games and 4-0 ATS in their last four bowl games. The total has gone ‘over’ in five of their last six non-conference games.
The Sooners are 2-5 ATS in their last seven games overall and 1-4 ATS in their last five bowl games. The total has gone ‘over’ in four of their last five neutral-site games as favorites.
Oklahoma has been a tough team to figure out this season with some close calls and bad losses. When you add in a number of injuries to some key personnel, it hardly looks like the team that started out the season ranked No.1 in most people’s preseason polls. The Sooners will still find a way to win this game, but they will not be able to dominate it against an Iowa team that is better than its record. Take the Hawkeyes and the 13.5 points in a closer-than-expected battle.
