The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will continue their quest for an ACC Coastal Division title this Saturday afternoon in a conference clash with the Virginia Cavaliers at Scott Stadium. Game time is slated for 3:30 p.m. and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
Georgia Tech is off to one of its best starts in recent memory with a perfect 6-0 record straight-up (4-1-1 against the spread). It is coming off a 21-16 victory over Maryland as a 15.5-point home favorite in one of its more sluggish outings of the season. The total stayed well below the 64-point line after going ‘over’ the total in its first five games.
The Yellow Jackets can attribute their early success this year to a punishing ground game that is ranked fourth in the nation with a staggering average of 360.5 yards a game. Running backs’ Orwin Smith and David Sims have combined for 772 yards on 80 attempts for an impressive average of 9.65 yards per carry. Georgia Tech’s offense is ranked sixth in the country in scoring with an average of 46.5 points a game.
Airginia comes into this game well-rested after a bye week. The week before, it hammered out a 21-20 victory over Idaho as a 16.5-point home favorite. The Cavaliers have a 3-2 SU record overall, but they are just 1-4 ATS. The total has stayed ‘under’ in four of the five games.
You have to question whether or not Virginia can keep pace with the Yellow Jackets prolific offense considering it is only averaging 27.2 points a game, which is ranked 69th in the nation. The Cavaliers do have a balanced attack with 261.6 yards a game passing and 177.2 yards a game on the ground, but they have still struggled to put the ball in the end zone, especially against some of the better teams they have faced this year.
Georgia Tech is 8-2-1 ATS in its last 11 games as a road favorite and 4-1-1 ATS in its last six games overall. The total has gone ‘over’ in five of its last seven games on the road and in five of its last six games overall.
Virginia is 1-4 ATS in its last five games as a home underdog and 2-8 ATS in its last 10 games against the ACC. The total has stayed ‘under’ in four of its last five home games and in six of its last seven games overall.
Head-to-head in this series, the favorite is 7-2 ATS in the last nine meetings and the total has stayed ‘under’ in five of the last seven games. The Yellow Jackets are just 1-5 ATS in their last six trips to Virginia, but rolled to a 34-9 victory as 5.5-point road favorites in their last trip here in 2009.
Stick with Georgia Tech all the way in this one as there is no way the Cavaliers’ defense will be able to slow the Yellow Jackets down enough to keep this game close for a full four quarters.
