The Georgia Bulldogs will go on the road to try and knock off the unbeaten Auburn Tigers this upcoming Saturday in a classic SEC showdown. Kickoff from Jordan Hare Stadium is set for 3:30 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast live on CBS.
Georgia bounced back from a heart-breaking 34-31 OT loss to Florida on Oct. 30 by pummeling Idaho State, out of the IAA Big Sky Conference, 55-7 this past Saturday. The Bulldogs covered as a 44.5 point favorite and the total went ‘over’ the 57 point line. The win moved Georgia’s record to 5-5 both straight-up and against the spread for the season. It is currently 3-4 SU in the SEC.
The Bulldogs are fairly balanced on both sides of the ball as their defense is ranked 23rd in the nation in points allowed; giving up an average of 19.4 points per game, while their offense is ranked 25th in scoring; averaging 33.8 points per game. Their main problems this season have come against the better teams in the SEC where they have been outscored 106-73 in their four conference losses. QB Aaron Murray has played extremely well at times and overall has completed 61.5 percent of his passes for 2,307 yards. He has 18 touchdown passes and six interceptions. WR A.J. Green has been his No.1 target with 510 receiving yards on 32 receptions with seven of them being caught for scores.
Auburn is well aware that a win this week and next week at No. 12 Alabama will put it in the SEC title game and one win away from a shot at playing for a national championship, but the Tigers cannot afford to get caught looking down the road in this one. Last Saturday, Auburn took a breather from a brutal conference schedule by beating up on IAA Chattanooga 62-24. The Tigers could not cover as a 40.5 point home favorite and the total went way ‘over’ the 73.5 point line. Auburn is now a perfect 10-0 SU but just 6-4 ATS. It is 6-0 SU in conference play.
The Tigers’ defense has shown it can be scored upon as it is giving up an average of 24.3 points per game, ranking it 55th in the country. Their offense has made up for this by averaging 42.2 points per game, which is sixth best in the nation. Much of the offense’s success can be attributed to the play of Heisman Trophy hopeful Cameron Newton. The junior quarterback has completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 1,890 yards and 19 TD passes, but has done most of the damage with his feet. He leads the team in rushing with 1,146 yards on 176 carries, with 15 of those runs resulting in touchdowns.
Georgia is 1-3 both SU and ATS in its last four road games. The total has gone ‘over’ in seven of its last 10 games overall.
Auburn is 7-0 SU at home this season but just 4-3 ATS. The total has gone ‘over’ in six of its last 10 games overall.
Head-to-head, Georgia has won six of the last 10 games SU while each team has won five of those games ATS. Two years ago, the Bulldogs won 17-13 as a nine-point road favorite. Last season, they covered as a four-point home favorite in a 31-24 win over the Tigers.
This has all the makings of a trap game for Auburn with a huge showdown against Alabama looming in the not too distant future. This is a much better Tiger team than the ones that lost the last two games to Georgia, and by most standards this has to be considered a down-year for the Bulldogs. None the less stick with Auburn for the outright win, but take Georgia plus the points.
